You have to wonder at this point if McDavid asks for a trade before the end of the season. There's no way he's happy about Nicholson's decision to stand pat with what they currently have, given his recent comments.

Except Lebron kept his options open and didn't sign an 8 year deal after his rookie contract. McDavid has himself to blame if he wants out of there.

I give him until this time next year to make that decision. He wont ask to leave until he is completely broken.

When someone offers you $100M, you say yes. You can always demand a trade.

The Oilers are dead in the water. They can’t give up any of their 3 or 4 good players, despite what they claim they have nothing in the pipeline, they alienated Talbot who is probably going to play “screw you” at trade time... They are totally, completely and utterly effed. I love it

IMO I think this firing actually means they won't stand pat.

If they were actually just going to do nothing and let the season ride out they would have just waited and fired Chiarelli in the offseason.

But I think the Oilers management team / ownership group actually wants to make a big splash to try and make the playoffs this year.

Then they saw the big negative backlash from the Koskinen hiring being made by Chiarelli and realized they couldn't have him making any more big moves from a public perception standpoint.

The stuff around still believing they are a playoff team, thinking they have better assets now then when Chiarelli took over, and that they think they are 1 or 2 pieces away from winning screams a big move to me.

Also they fire Chiarelli but the guy he brought with him from Boston, who was Chiarelli's hand picked right hand man, takes over...what really is changing.

That doesn't mean you get one though. Bad press you (and the team) will get. Annoyances from the NHLPA you will (probably) get. Your agent might not be overly happy, but that's debatable.

And you have to find a team that will take you, your high-priced contract and three of your best friends (and their high-priced contracts)....

Love to see Mark Spector with the heavy hitting article loaded with strong language criticizing Chiarelli now that he's out the door. The usual baby soft wipe powder puff pieces are done with for Mark! Now don't make Mark write something bad about a Gretzky though.

Spector and Baghdad Bob (thanks for that one, Estrada!) are practically giddy about all the prospects who will be clamouring to take the GM job in Edmonton.

Do we know what the terms of Chiarelli contract were?
In other words, did he set himself up for life?
Nobody outside will take that job without ridiculous salary guarantees, imo.

I think you're mostly on track except kosten'em.

Spector took it upon himself to let everyone know what a big shot insider he was proclaiming chiarelli was solely responsible for signing/negotiating with koskinen.

Then he asked Nicholson about it today, who very flatly refuted spectors 'reporting' right to his face. It was a group decision.

Frankly, I see the chia firing coming down now for 1 or 2 reasons:

Reason 1) chiarelli was not willing to continue to make terrible moves that would cost the organization dearly like moving pool party or a top 10 pick etc, or take a terrible deal to move Talbot. So they fired him to get someone in his chair who WOULD be willing to make those kinds of idiotic moves. Enter Scott howson stage left.

Reason 2) Chiarelli was simply unable to consummate any deals league wide because he was driving too hard of a bargain or because of residual negative feelings towards the oilers from organizations/GMs around the league, so they fired him to let everyone know Scott howson was open for business.

All you needed to hear today was confirmation the oil won't be naming anyone acting or interim GM. I used to do #### like that when I didn't want my name attached to subpar work. "Nah, go ahead, I don't need my name on the website."

I believe this nothing more than a PR move to appease the masses who had simply had enough, and Chia was the patsy to make it look good.

OBC is alive and well....even though it doesn't exist according to Nicholson.
