Just for interest, and I'm not sure how much stock to put into it, but here is the Scouting Report on Koskinen at the Hockey News:

Quote:
SCOUTING REPORT
Has tremendous size for the National Hockey League and uses it well to cover the lower half of the net. Challenges shooters, and is athletic and mobile. Can make some spectacular reaction saves. Drops down too quickly at times and can get out of position. Relies too much on his length and sometimes he does not get back up on his skates quickly enough. His fundamentals are a little lacking.
LONG RANGE POTENTIAL:
Big, talented but inconsistent goaltender.

Doesn't sound like a $4.5 per kinda guy to me!

Amazing.
There is no defending the Koskinen deal, it is horrible. But DeSmith signed at quite a discount for reasons known only to him, and he is signed to be a backup whereas Koskinen is paid to be the starter.

It’s why Rittich’s deal won’t be as cheap as DeSmith’s. But luckily it won’t be for close to Koskinen money unless something incredible happens this spring.

Another side effect of this signing:

It obviously means that Talbot is not in their starter plans. Will be difficult to get any sort of reliable and impassioned goaltending from him for the rest of the year. Way too early in this season to alienate the backup.

Not only is Chia screwing Edmonton, which I approve of...he also seems hell bent to screw up the market on other contracts on his way out

Apparently Talbot found out about the extension a few days ago. Then they start him against the Canes and he gets lit up. I imagine it’s not a coincidence, although that team has so many fundamental issues that Talbot has about 10 other reasons why he would have been lit up

It's like the Oilers have absolutely no salary cap projections of their own. Never looking past the current season

All things considered, this deal is worse than when Cliff Fletcher thought Jeff Finger was someone else and gave him 4M per.

I’ll be honest, I kinda like this tendy. Probably a great backup, with maaaaaybe average starter potential.

But why the heck does this deal get signed today!? This makes no sense! Forget the insanely inflated salary, why is it being signed in January? Incredible. I love it.

Honestly I think he's similar to Ramo. Good KHL stats, average NHL stats, but whereas Calgary was smart enough to only extend for one year to see if it all goes off the rails, Edmonton decides to put all their eggs in one weak basket.

Like Ramo, I think Koskinen could be a solid backup. But backups don't get 4.5mil

Anyone who thinks Chia is making these moves without signoff, is fooling themselves. I don't think he has had full autonomy since the season started, and has had zero since Hitchcock was brought on.

Now, he's the face of it and will and is forced by Lowe and MacT to take the abuse by fans and media and hits to his reputation becuase he's getting paid for that. If Costinthem plays out, Lowe will take credit, if he doesn't, Chias fault.

But no way he alone makes decisions like this for 3 more years when he's not sure when his last meal at Rogers Place is.

Bottom line, these moves have Lowe written all over them. I am sure the justification is to solidify the goalie situation which means they can now dump Talbot.

I think my favorite part of this is that it demonstrates how high up the problems go with the Oilers.

The fact that they make moves of this significance on the heels of an emotional weekend paints an awful picture to their fanbase.

It quite literally goes as high up as the owner. Feels like the guy writing checks is throwing fits and has everyone underneath him running like chickens with their heads cut off.

It makes no sense. If you waited until april to confirm that Koskinen isn't even worth 4.5 you could save a million or two. And now Talbot won't really care about the Oilers fate this season since his tenure there is all but confirmed to be done. No upside, potentially a fair bit of downside.

Just a senseless knee jerk to the weekend.

This is actually a great move, not a great contract but a great strategy. By throwing stupid money at Costco, Chia is sending a message to free agents that the Oilers will pay twice their value if they sign there.
