Just for interest, and I'm not sure how much stock to put into it, but here is the Scouting Report on Koskinen at the Hockey News:
Quote:
SCOUTING REPORT
Has tremendous size for the National Hockey League and uses it well to cover the lower half of the net. Challenges shooters, and is athletic and mobile. Can make some spectacular reaction saves. Drops down too quickly at times and can get out of position. Relies too much on his length and sometimes he does not get back up on his skates quickly enough. His fundamentals are a little lacking.
LONG RANGE POTENTIAL:
Big, talented but inconsistent goaltender.
Casey DeSmith
27 years old, pending UFA
42 GP, 2.59 GAA, 0.918 SV%
Just re-signed for $1.25M x 3 years
Mikko Koskinen
30 years old, pending UFA
31 GP, 2.97 GAA, 0.905 SV%
Just re-signed for $4.5M x 3 years
Amazing.
There is no defending the Koskinen deal, it is horrible. But DeSmith signed at quite a discount for reasons known only to him, and he is signed to be a backup whereas Koskinen is paid to be the starter.
It’s why Rittich’s deal won’t be as cheap as DeSmith’s. But luckily it won’t be for close to Koskinen money unless something incredible happens this spring.
It obviously means that Talbot is not in their starter plans. Will be difficult to get any sort of reliable and impassioned goaltending from him for the rest of the year. Way too early in this season to alienate the backup.
Apparently Talbot found out about the extension a few days ago. Then they start him against the Canes and he gets lit up. I imagine it’s not a coincidence, although that team has so many fundamental issues that Talbot has about 10 other reasons why he would have been lit up

I'm not saying I hate the signing. But it is very concerning that Chia has the authority to make decisions for the club which will impact it as far out as 2022!

Guaranteed Talbot’s traded before the deadline now. This is a good deal, people should look at what the other starters are making.

You guys can't tell me that Chiarelli doesn't have an active plot to sabotage this team. There's really no other explanation.

This is my hot take man. The guy is on a mission to make sure Edmonton is ****ed over when he is not around to make himself look better. He seems like the type of GM that would do this.

Unreal.

Why do we do the things we do...?
Couldn’t this have waited? Couldn’t we see how the next couple months go? He hasn’t been exactly lights out lately.

You know what the Oiler's don't have enough of? Bad contracts. Keep the laughs coming Chia.

Chiarelli has zero negotiating skills in his body and deserves to be thrown into a cactus.

At this point we need to seriously consider if the Flames colluded with Chiarelli in helping him get hired. There’s no other explanation.

This might be the straw that broke the camels back for me. What the ****? 4.5 per for a ****ing backup goalie?! Seriously Chia?

So Chia is not getting fired anytime soon.
Quote:
for half a season of good play?

That explains the waiver additions and sending down Jones. Chiarelli obviously thought he had to clear space to sign a contract extension.
Seems expensive, doesn't it? Did he have to pay the "you're the goalie of a garbage team now" tax?
Quote:
Peter, you’ve done it again!

What a deal to get after just 27 NHL games...

hahah love it! Goalie with 31 games of NHL experience for $4.5 Million for 3 years. Oh Chiarelli you keep doing you man!

Casey DeSmith who has better numbers and more games only got 1.5 per over 3 years.
So what exactly was PC using as a comparable?

Oof.

Alot of money after just getting lit up by Calgary and Carolina.
Chia and the Oilers ownership being cruel to Oilers fans everywhere.

Higher AAV than Matt Murray.

TWENTY-FIVE GAMES AT 30 YEARS OLD.
That gets you $13,500,000 over 3 years.
How many ways can Chia continue to show he’s the biggest ****** in hockey?
Quote:
clearly Chia is securing his job by making sure no one wants the Oilers **** show gm spot. lol

Chia is making all the right moves. For every other team in the league the guy is a hero.

I'm fairly confident hfboards could run the Oilers better through a series of polls to make decisions than Chiarelli has.

I have a feeling Chias phone is going to be ringing off the hook more than any other GM on trade deadline day. 30 other GMs want to fleece this man.

I’ll be honest, I kinda like this tendy. Probably a great backup, with maaaaaybe average starter potential.
But why the heck does this deal get signed today!? This makes no sense! Forget the insanely inflated salary, why is it being signed in January? Incredible. I love it.

Honestly I think he's similar to Ramo. Good KHL stats, average NHL stats, but whereas Calgary was smart enough to only extend for one year to see if it all goes off the rails, Edmonton decides to put all their eggs in one weak basket.
Like Ramo, I think Koskinen could be a solid backup. But backups don't get 4.5mil

Anyone who thinks Chia is making these moves without signoff, is fooling themselves. I don't think he has had full autonomy since the season started, and has had zero since Hitchcock was brought on.
Now, he's the face of it and will and is forced by Lowe and MacT to take the abuse by fans and media and hits to his reputation becuase he's getting paid for that. If Costinthem plays out, Lowe will take credit, if he doesn't, Chias fault.
But no way he alone makes decisions like this for 3 more years when he's not sure when his last meal at Rogers Place is.
Bottom line, these moves have Lowe written all over them. I am sure the justification is to solidify the goalie situation which means they can now dump Talbot.

I think my favorite part of this is that it demonstrates how high up the problems go with the Oilers.
The fact that they make moves of this significance on the heels of an emotional weekend paints an awful picture to their fanbase.
It quite literally goes as high up as the owner. Feels like the guy writing checks is throwing fits and has everyone underneath him running like chickens with their heads cut off.
I’ll be honest, I kinda like this tendy. Probably a great backup, with maaaaaybe average starter potential.

It makes no sense. If you waited until april to confirm that Koskinen isn't even worth 4.5 you could save a million or two. And now Talbot won't really care about the Oilers fate this season since his tenure there is all but confirmed to be done. No upside, potentially a fair bit of downside.
This is actually a great move, not a great contract but a great strategy. By throwing stupid money at Costco, Chia is sending a message to free agents that the Oilers will pay twice their value if they sign there.
