Human nature to have recency bias. And don’t forget Gulutzan was coaching Brodie to turn the puck over.
But a huge difference is that this team is winning big time.

I was very pro moving Dougie and reuniting Brodano with the optimism it would work out as well as it has. I am also of the opinion if Brodie could be moved for a decently high pick, top level prospect, or combination of the both this summer they should look at it.

I just don't see GM's looking to trade for Brodie when he only has a year left on his deal.
If he is to be dealt, I would want to see a Kapanen/Brodie trade.
We can't make this trade until one of Andersson/Kylington/Valimaki prove themselves worthy of a top 4 spot. It's likely but as of right now I would say no.

I think we've seen that Gio makes whoever he plays with a much better player. Sell Brodie while he's high and not have to lose him or Hams at the draft for free
I've tried to address all our "problems". (I mean we are second after all)
We need a decent second goalie (Allen)
We need more size and physicality (Maroon)
We need the second line to be more of a threat. (Stone)
Cheap left side and right side veteran d depth, while moving out Stone's contract (Bortuzzo, Borowiecki)
|
Hamilton was no better with Gio than he was with Chara. For Gio to prop his ass up, Gio went from a 60 point pace guy to 38. Back with Brodie, it’s now an 84 point pace.
Brodie enables Gio, and he is over a point per game player, over halfway in to the season.
Why give that up?
Tre could consider making a deal if necessary like other GMs did to protect his assets.

For better or for worse I think a completely healthy lineup, is the lineup Treliving and Peters have deemed to be the lineup they will either win or lose with.
You can argue that there are holes, but every team has holes. Massive changes in the lineup are best saved for the offseason.
It would be kinda fun to discuss if the team be having the same success if the changes were made midseason rather than the summer. Those were franchise changing moves.
Of course if big names become available, you need to assess if they could fit seamlessly into your lineup. How often have those types of trades helped a team in their run?
What I would like to see is maybe the depth moves. What if say, Brodie and Hamonic get injured? I like the ability of Valimaki, Andersson and Kylington to elevate in the lineup with their skillsets. Who fills in? Prout? Yikes.
Same goes for the forwards.
Dance with the ones that brought you. Add depth if you can.
Goaltending is the outlier. Love me some Rittich, but I still feel it is a question mark for a long playoff run.

That is what happened with Karlsson, Pacioretty, Skinner, Ferland this past summer. I could see a team looking at Brodie and wanting to sign him to a long term extension right after trading for him similar to what the Knights did with Pacioretty.
I think Kapanen would be a decent target for Brodie but the only reason I really see moving on from Brodie would be to save on the cap which is why picks or ELC prospects would be ideal.
Something like Brodie for Dobson, Ho Sang and the Flames 2nd? That way the entire $4.65M of Brodie’s cap hit is off the books.

This is the kind of season when you do moves to push you over the top.
Your 1st will be mid 20s at the highest I'd gather if you deal it for help. Bringing in a quality D or 2nd line C/RW would be wise imho. Don't wanna be kicking yourself later if backlund or hanifin suddenly tweak something in March.
It's not so much about making yourself a juggernaut on paper as it is giving yourself insurance for a long spring if you lose a guy or two.

I don't see his cap hit being a problem next season. The possible problem is his cap hit in later years if he's asking too much for an extension. Ideally the Flames would sign him to around $5.5 mill per season for 5 years but definitely no more than $6 mill per season.
It would be nice if they could trade him for a younger RD that isn't at TJ's level right now, but might be in a couple of years.

Gary Suter was only able to play in 5 playoff games in '89.
In '04, three of our eight top scoring forwards went down, Dean McAmmond, Matthew Lombardi (13 gp) and Steve Reinprecht. Thus, increased roles for the newly acquired Shean Donovan, Chris Simon, Ville Nieminen, and Marcus Nilson.
Then on D. we lose Toni Lydman and Denis Gauthier, making way for the dore's, Steve Montador and Mike Commodore.

Dish out crap, get some gold, and just assume every addition and subtraction is a positive one.
No matter how many times it doesn’t work out that way, it’s the tried and true method of bad trade proposals and they never seem to go away.
Probably right there with “he’s on waivers, we should pick him up” and “anyone is better than (insert underperforming player)”

Lookin at Hayes or Zucarello would be my guess.

Following Boston around?
I'd love Kreider or Buchnevich from the rangers.

I wonder if the Flames could get a 2nd round pick? That would be awesome.

Not surprising, Oilers love their Oil Kings and Lazar is probably the most prominent of all former Oil Kings.
Nothing less than a 2nd round pick though. I still think Lazar has a future in Calgary.

Hayes would be ideal. Hell you could shuffle Lindholm to the 2C if Johnny and Kevin's legendary chemistry is still intact. Lindholm has done well on both lines. You add a winger and you make your center depth greater at the same time. Or you just slot him in on line two as a frolik upgrade.
I've wanted the Flames to go after him for about three years now.

Serious question - when was the last BIG deadline acquisition that really helped a team win the cup? When I say big, I mean giving up a first, etc. I feel it's usually the smaller deals that make the best impact.
I'm a little weary of making a big splash and would prefer we tweak the smaller holes in our lineup (depth, backup G).
