Maclean is not even remembering the Canada Cup right. At the "crucial moment" it was Hawerchuk with Mario and Gretzky. Really the only time Messier was with them was on the PP. Otherwise Messier was almost always with Gartner and Anderson.

Like that Spector article a few years back revisiting these never gets old.

To be fair Eberle and Hall have played their best seasons recently so he isn't too far off the mark.

Meh I still like Ron MacLean, maybe it's nostalgia for the old days.

He's a goof sometimes and said a goof thing. He's not an analyst and he just lapped up when the analysts around him were spewing. 2015 may have been the height of the national media circle jerk around the Oilers. Analysts couldn't write articles fast enough declaring them the Next Ones.

Meanwhile, CP knew. We always know.

I came to say just that. Eberle and Hall were both lights out, they just had to ditch the Oilers to do it.

So perhaps the Oilers have been building something special. They just happen to be building it in New Jersey and Long Island.

The only thing I really liked Ron MacLean for was his habit of getting dummied by Bettman in their annual ASG one on one.

You do know Eberle's 3 best seasons, points-wise, were with the Oilers...?

Hall, fair enough - Hart Trophy speaks for itself. Though from 2012 - 2014 he played at an awfully high level for the Oilers as well.

Oh god, no. No. No. No.

The epitome of the Oilers fetish occurred during their playoff appearance in 2017, and for the subsequent summer leading all the way to Game #1 of the 2017–18 season. The hype was never higher, nor more ridiculous. Following the Oilers v. Flames inaugural game of that season National media were openly wondering if Connor McDavid would score 100 goals. It was THAT idiotic.

They want the league to play Flag Hockey against their players yet Lucic and Kassian get to run around hunting guys like Lucic did against Joseph and Kassian against Tkachuk.

The weakest fake tough team in the league.

Hahaha! Ryan Strome currently has 4 goals and 9 points since he was traded to the New York Rangers in 22 games. Ryan Spooner has scored 2 goals and 3 points in his 20 games in Edmonton.

The Ryan Strome who has 4G and 5A in 22 games with NYR for Ryan Spooner who has 2G and 1A in 20 games?

Correct it was Hawerchuk who ran a pick on the Russian defender getting away with interference for Mario to snipe away!

Terrible asset management no doubt. Chia will tell you he needed the cap space but Eberle was traded a year earlier than he needed to be, cap-wise. No argument on any of that - Eberle to Strome to Spooner has been a disaster. But that wasn't the point I was correcting.

This whole hitting thing is bugging me because its created this weird discussion of star players getting preferential treatment.

I looked at that hit on McDavid into the boards, realistically its a 2 minute penalty. The hit against the Kings I saw no problem with. The elbowing penalty a 2 minute penalty.

I was watching Sportsnet and they were comparing it to the QB penalties in the NFL. Basically the league needs to step in to protect its star players. But that's not how hockey can and should work. At the end of the day hockey is still a physical sport. Now the slashing and dirty hits, call away, but you'd damn well better call it for every player then, and that includes calling the stars for it.

Unless the want each team to declare a star and put a shiny silver helmet on and put a 1 foot circle around him.

Every team targets, including the Oilers, its a defensive strategy, because frankly you can't stick check a player that's really good with the puck, and you can't funnel players all the time.

The incessant whining about McDavid not getting calls is silly, on top of that I think over his first couple of years he was drawing a ton of penalties and the calls started going out because he's a world class diver.
