And that's exactly how it should be. Young pushing out the old due to hard work. I like it.

This trade creates cap space for the Flames next year when they need to sign Tkachuk, and a goalie.

I think its completely stupid. Eberle is the counter to the type of player you want in the post-season. Frolik is the exact type of player you want. Deal makes the team worse at the time you want the team to be at its best.

Flames lack depth scoring and Eberle is a proven 60pt winger. Frolik is not fitting in with the team under Peters the Flamea have a much better record when he is out of the lineup.

No doubt Frolik is a solid 2 way player and Eberle is one dimensional but neither player is that great and it is moving big money from the bottom 6 and freeing up space for the summer.

I feel like if Frolik’s current season remains on this trajectory of scratches, injuries and 4th line minutes we will be looking at a buyout to get the cap space we need next summer. If not Eberle I would take any reasonable pending ufa player for Frolik.

From Friedman's 31 thoughts

Treliving and Frolik had to know Walsh’s tweet was coming; he never does it without consulting a client or trying to work it out with the team. The history is that a Jonathan Drouin or a Jaroslav Halak or a Max Pacioretty eventually gets traded, and no doubt the Flames will check the market. But, in a year where they are thinking they’ve got a shot, they won’t do anything just for the sake of it. Unless a Frolik trade makes them better or gives them the assets to make themselves better, he’s staying. He is a good player.

Frolik belongs on that second line. They play very well with him there. In no world should Czarnik slot in before him. Unless he gets traded Frolik should play the remainder of the season on that second unit.

As a pending UFA, Eberle can likely be moved to a contender at the deadline for a decent pick.

I can't imagine why the Islanders would want to take back a declining player with term left?

They are in the playoff hunt as well. They already have 2 2nds going into next year so if they want to make a playoff push this season a guy like Frolik helps more than a draft pick.

Frolik is far from an offensive juggernaut. But with the desire for puck possession in the top 6, he is the best option of the revolving door. His relentless puck retrieval abilities and ability to make the simple smart play allows that line to do what they do best. Better than Neal and Czarnik. Slightly ahead of Bennett as far as the "Smart play" goes. Behind Lindholm.

I think we’re all undervaluing Frolik here based in his role this season and a disappointing season last year. I attribute his down year last year to Gulutzan’s system, and he wasn’t the only player to see depressed stats last year. But, at 30 years old, he is far from old and has at least 3-4 productive years ahead of him.

Prior to last year, he has consistently been a 0.5PPG player for four straight seasons, and even this year despite a reduced role and injuries, he’s near that mark again. The only reason this is even a situation is because the Flames have had young players like Bennett and Jankowski step up this season and provide key shorthanded play and energy respectively. These young guys can’t stay on the fourth line forever. I agree Frolik always plays before Czarnik this year, but the others have shown more this year. Most teams would be happy to have Frolik in a third line role, the Flames unfortunately just don’t have room there. Even the Jets the other day in the ATL were commenting on how they really would love to have a Frolik back in their bottom 6.

I think the Flames are happy to keep Frolik as he is a serviceable player and exactly the type of guy the Flames would look at acquiring at the deadline if he wasn’t already on our team. He will get his ice time I’m sure in the stretch run as we are bound to have an injury. And after the success of the 3M line reunification last game, maybe he gets another opportunity there.

I actually like the Eberle idea though. Right shot, highly skilled, and maybe not as expensive as he would be normally as he has had an off year. He’d be good depth scoring if the Flames are hoping for an extended run. And I see no reason why Frolik and a 2nd/prospect wouldn’t be of interest if the Isles, as he would be a valuable player for them extending into next year.

So it sounds like the issue is Bennett vs. frolik for that second line playing time.

Neither guy is happy unless they are playing there.

So clearly Frolik needs to fight Kane now

i am not opposed to adding another winger, though i don't know if i would give up Frolik in order to do that... i think additional scoring depth is desirable and if the 3M line can recapture some of its magic, that would help immensely.

the Bennett/Janko/Neal line feels like it has potential to breakout, but all three players have been, to one degree or another, inconsistent...hopefully, Neal appearing to be better will benefit Janko and Bennett to become that energy line that is tough to play against.

i am biased towards Eberle due to the WJC... i like the player, but wouldn't want to give up much for him... Toronto seems to have a few guys that they might be willing to move due to the upcoming salary crunch in Johansson and Brown... might be worth kicking the tires to see if a deal can be made there...

One thing Eberle would bring other than cap relief next year is he could replace Ryan as the right shot forward on the PP that would help getting that second unit going. Who knows maybe the Islanders laugh at a Frolik for Eberle trade but I think it is fairly close.

He is still at it

Allan Walsh @walsha
Michael Frolik with 1 goal, +2 and 5 shots on goal (2nd among all Calgary players) with 11:04 icetime (11th out of 12 forwards). That’s right...11th out of 12 forwards.
