Oh Bob. 16 out of 21 teams made the playoffs in 1991.
Being from Cape Breton and having had seasons tickets to the AHL Cape Breton Oilers (all the while being a Calgary Flames fan) this tweet nearly made me spit out my coffee:

Just looking things up....

So.... that great 2016-2017 season, where Mark Spector made his now infamous comment that we'd never catch the great Oilers for a great many years... where the Oilers actual made the playoffs for the first time in over 10 years... after 40 games, the Oilers had 47 points. The Flames have 52 points after 40 games this year... hmmmm, I guess we must be GREATER - right mark???

So Johnny Gaudreau just past the great McDavid in points... Wow! (4 points in each of the last two games)

Was anyone else expecting Principe to ask that college kid what he thought of being near McDavid's aura?

LOL, someone in McDavid's post-game scrum asked him about his team's current "hot streak."

The Oilers have now lost six of seven.

In the process of trying to find the pick that the Oilers gave away for the privelage of hiring Chiarelli (53rd overall in 2017, Jack Studnicka), I found this gem of an article.

https://torontosun.com/2015/07/01/oi...1-d40a5499ad12

Oilers hiring Peter Chiarelli is best move of 2015

Quote:
The best free agent acquisition of 2015: Peter Chiarelli.

Kudos to Oilers president Bob Nicholson for snapping up the former Boston general manager just days after he had been given the boot by the Bruins. By acting quickly, Nicholson signed up his No. 1 target before many other teams with GM vacancies had the opportunity to swoop in and scoop him up.

Chiarelli’s wooing of coach Todd McLellan was a nice start.

Before we go any further, some Bruins fans will whine that it was Chiarelli who put their team into salary cap hell in the first place.

In response, consider this: How did you like that Stanley Cup win in 2011, Boston’s first in 39 years? Or the fact that the Bruins made two appearances in the finals in the past five seasons?

Besides, it wasn’t Chiarelli who traded your future franchise defenceman, Dougie Hamilton, to Calgary. That honour went to his replacement, Don Sweeney.

Whether Chiarelli’s moves in Edmonton will work out remains to be seen. But you have to be impressed by the way he has been proactive in changing the face of the franchise.

Sure, he had absolutely no influence on Edmonton’s winning of the lottery, which netted the Oilers Connor McDavid. It certainly helps a rebuild when your foundation is a potential generational superstar.

Where Chiarelli has excelled is trying to fill in the holes around McDavid.

Wednesday’s signing of Andrej Sekera, 29, underscored that point. Sure, the six-year, $33 million US pact handed to the veteran blueliner is steep, to be sure. But in bringing in Sekera to a blueline that also includes newcomers Eric Gryba and Griffin Reinhart — two defencemen he acquired via trade — the Oilers back end, in badly need of repair, got the facelift it so needed.

And don’t forget the trade that brought goaltender Cam Talbot from New York. There are no guarantees Talbot will be the answer, but at least he is a step up from Ben Scrivens and company.

Only time will tell if Chiarelli’s moves will pay instant dividends. Whatever the case, we’re betting they will in the long run.

That Oilers Coyote's game was so hard to watch last night. It was just bad, slow tentative hockey. In the third period the Oilers weren't sending forecheckers in, they were just plugging the neutral zone.

I think that the telling thing is that with the Yotes net empty they had McDavid out for a full almost two minutes and he barely stumbled his way to the bench after his goal completely exhausted.

Its just stupid, I get that Hitch doesn't trust anyone else, but at some point this over playing McDavid is going to lead to an injury.

In football we have this discussion all the time around playing distribution, especially with running backs and Olineman, and I get angry with my position coaches.

Me - "Lets put the backup OL/RB for this series and let the starter catch his breath"
Position Coach - "We can't do that Captain"
Me - "Why not?"
Position Coach - "The backups not very good and I don't trust him"
Me - "Well maybe if we coached him up instead of over relying on the starter we won't be in a position of not having a starter later in the year"

It just strikes me with Edmonton that they've created levels. "Well we can trust McDavid and Draisaitl and the Nuge in all these situations"

Well how about coaching up other players so they can at least function on the ice?

Nah.

What a horribly written article, in addition to being incredibly stupid.

"Only time will tell if Chiarelli’s moves will pay instant dividends." WTF? If you have to take time to "tell", it's not very "instant", is it?

The writer of that glorious piece Mike Zeisberger, looks a lot like Pete
I wonder if anyone has ever seen them in the same room at the same time?

I love reading past articles like that, especially when they use the names of players acquired with such smug optimism.

Gryba and Reinhart? Bahahaha

What a great "facelift" that was.
