The Sharks are a team we're battling for the Division.

I think I would agree with you if Sam Bennett threw a similar hit in tomorrow's Red Wings game but there's more than just the results of one game at stake here.

this was the right call in light of the Dumba hit...fractionally late, but wasn't a high hit.

SJ will respond no different than calgary did the next game at Minnesota... that's old time hockey and i have no doubt Benny steps up (so long as its in his weight class), like Kane for example.

Exactly. Plus the previous minutes were very chippy, this wasn't some one off event. Bennett sent a message to the entire Sharks team, play with fire and you're going to get burned.

That said I hope the guy isn't hurt

So how do the Flames deal with the sharks bloodlust in the next game? Prout for sure but call up Peluso too?

I'm actually wondering if anyone is going to go after Mantha in the wings game for what he did to Hamonic or if its been too long.

That and Ference jumping Stempniak are the two dirtiest extracurriculars I've seen on Flames in the last 10 or so.

I’m not sure you understand what context is. The Sharks had been taking liberties with the Flames all night, including that ridiculous Dell splash (spear? Slash?) The refs weren’t doing their job. It was a clean hit. With or without context the hit was fine.

Next game the Flames should out skate and out score the Sharks just like last night. They can take dumb penalties if they want. Bennett will answer the bell with Kane if need be.

The screenshot on the youtube looks damning, but the video tells a different story, as the ref starts skating up ice at the same instant as the spear (ergo his eyes were likely looking more up ice). Maybe he caught something in periphery vision (though by his angle he may not have actually seen Dell's action), but to say he saw it clearly and did nothing contradicts both Occam's and Hanlon's razors.

All four zebras missing it is pretty shocking, but I can see how it might be possible that they didn't see the stick work and assumed it was a leg out trip (which based on Dell's position, needs to be an interference penalty).

For me, this comes back to the need for a video official in radio contact (like rugby) with the on-ice officials, mostly looking at a few things:
- puck across the line (shots the ring in/out quickly)
- blatant unsportsmanlike conduct behind the play
- puck over the glass penalties (as an aside, I still don't see any reason this should be any different than icing)
- expediting the video review/challenge process

They should have a black and white ruling within 30 seconds on the first three items. The clock could start ticking on other video reviews a lot faster, and if there isn't a clear resolution in 90 seconds, call on the ice stands.

It's an extra job for officials - the same refs that ref a game on Tuesday could be the video ref on Wednesday. They're all on the same team doing the same job, it's not just an NHL suit catching their misses in real-time.

The league will tell everyone to keep it cool and other than some chirping in the warmup and a fight or two it'll otherwise be a boring game.

Context is there was under a minute left in a 3 goal game

As I said I didn't like it when it happened to backlund so I don't like it when the flames do it either

For what it's worth I don't think either were suspensionworthy, I just didn't like the hit

Good luck with that.

That tired old song and dance is as old as the game itself i think.

Every fan base of every sport are unable or unwilling to understand that the narrow view they see in regards to their team, is applicable to all fans of every team.

Even last night in an 8 goal outburst that had the home team winning in a walk, there was a claim of the "NHL doesn't want Calgary to lead the division" or something ridiculous along those lines, therefore the officials have been instructed to not let that happen i guess. Its all so dumb and ill thought out.

I mean....why would the league care one way or another who is leading a division half way through a season? A league that, oh yeah, the owners of this team are a part of! So ownership is spending to the cap....so they can conspire with others to make sure they lose?

It is just so absurd.

The most surprising thing to me in this thread is the amount of Flames fans that supported a suspension here. The refs didn't penalize him. The league won't suspend him. Yet some Flames fans were hoping for a suspension? For a huge open ice hit that didn't target a players head? It's just getting ridiculous. What's next? One game for a mean spirited trip?

Some fans really try too hard to steer clear of being labeled a "homer".

Kind of drives me nuts.

I just watched it a again a few times, it is marginal if it was late or not. Ya the Sharks won’t like it, other fan bases will call for a suspension. As a flames fan, I didn’t like that Dumba hit but I feel this one is different. Backs shouldn’t have had his head down on a vulnerable position but this guy should have seen Sam coming. His head was up, how does he not see him?

I’m glad the leagues handled this one correctly. It wasn’t a hit to the head, it was a text book body check. Shoulder to chest.

Benny was pissed and rightfully so, the Sharks were being sh#theads all night and refs did diddly squat about it. I’m glad he did it, it wasn’t dirty, it was a good hockey play. It causes emotion on both sides and this is why we watch hockey. I hope the guy isn’t hurt but I think he learned a lesson tonight about playing in the NHL.

To be honest, I didn't love that Dumba or Bennett went for big hits late in decided games.

However Bennett was just taking the NHL's ruling on that exact matter to heart. They obviously told the Flames, perhaps even literally, that a big hit late in a game is just as valid as one in the middle of the game.

So in context, both within the game last night as well as the fallout of the Minnesota game, I have no problem with the Bennett hit.

Happy with the result because of the Dumba hit. I can see why a Shark would be unhappy with it, just like Flames with Backlund, given the time of the game.

If you're talking about context, why is Kane jumping Tkachuk from behind with a minute left in a 3 goal game. He was looking to escalate things, and that's exactly what happened.

Not saying Kane isn't allowed to be a pest, but if he doesn't do that, I think both teams play out the final minute without further incident.

Backlund got blindsided. He never saw Dumba, it was a predatory hit. Bennett was in Simek's sight the whole time, no idea how Simek could have not seen Bennet coming. It was as clean as they come, save for the tiny lateness.

Good, it’s nice to see the NHL get this one right. Clean hit shoulder to chest, maybe a hair late but that’s about as good of a hit as you’ll see in the NHL these days. Take those out of the game and you may as well ban hitting all together.

I respectfully disagree. I liked it more because of the context and because it was Bennett that had been slashed by Dell. It sends the right message. If you think you can chop me in the beans and there will be no consequences - you're wrong. I might not get you back but I will get somebody wearing your jersey.
