Even if all of their magic beans turn into beanstocks, Lucic and his NMC will still be there. So no idea what Staples is babbling about.

If they can't trade him then they will buy him out before the expansion draft.
Buyout would be 4M, 5.5M, 500k, 500k. Save 2M in cap space the first year, 500k the 2nd, and the two remaining years are nothing if it gets rid of that contract and frees up a protection slot.
The best thing in this more likely scenario, is that it means 2 more seasons of Lucic.

Seen elsewhere from a poor Oilers honk

I think to myself, that's simply is an exaggeration/hyperbole.
Nope...its true.
They have 5 guys with 3 or more goals. Calgary has 14.
Edmonton truly is no good.

It doesn't take a genius to watch McDavid play and realize that he is a special player who makes the league better.

Hes a good player and I was coming in basically to say this:

Add in his compete level, faceoff ability, 2-way game, etc, and McD has a long way to go to really be in the conversation if you ask me.
Oh and let's not forget he's won literally everything possible, both in team and personal awards. I would list them all but I'm too lazy. Like I said, it's basically everything except a Memorial Cup (although he took the Océanic to the tournament and was the top scorer)

McDavid is amazing.....at winding up in the neutral zone and making incredible plays at full speed.
Aaaaand.......?
Crosby is an amazing scorer, can make those plays at full speed, has probably the most lethal backhand in the league if not ever, plays 200 feet, wins faceoffs, makes clutch plays, backchecks, and on and on the list goes.
McDavid is great with the puck at full speed. And thats about it. His defensive awareness is atrocious and he is terrible at faceoffs.
McDavid is a great player and all but if people want to anoint him as the greatestest player in the league now and evar then you have to evaluate all of him, not just his ability to put up meaningless points on the Oilers through insane minutes, favourable matchups and basically one-way traffic.

I don't know if his defensive awareness is bad, I've seen him on the rare occasion make some pretty good back flow reads.
Here's what I think.
I think he's just a bit lazy, he's got natural skills that he uses, his speed, stickhandling, his vision with the puck. But he's just a lazy coaster on the back check when he's not flying by. I don't think he has near the physical game that a Crosby has. Crosby is a board beast, he's incredibly strong.
Also again there's the face offs, he's atrocious and always has been.
While his speed game is great, it just feels like he doesn't care about improving the other stuff.
"Ok, today Connor I want to work with you on backchecking"
McDavid yawns, and pulls out his smart phone "Nah, I got Drake on the line"
The next day
"Connor come on its time for a face off drill"
Connor does a fly by of the group and then heads to the bench "Nah, I'm good, just give me the puck in the neutral zone"
For me, Connor is absolutely elite, but he really brings one or two things to a team, but until he actually rounds out his game or shows that he's more then what he is now, I have a hard time with a Generational label, or a "This guy will lead you to the promised land label"
If I was a coach, I would be saying "Dude, we expect like a lot more from a 12.5 million dollar contract" To which his reply would be to hit the pause button on his xbox and reply
"F off old man, what do you know about hockeys"

Lol, and the team that beat Crosby was named the CHL Team of the Century as well this year.

Crosby ran into a wall of a team (thanks lockout!) but otherwise adds that hardware most years as well

Mike Smith has as many points as Kassian. He trails Puljujarvi by 1 point.
Between the two clubs they have 109 games remaining. A combination of Flames wins and Oilers losses that add to 51.5 (OTL count as .5) will mean the Oilers can not catch the Flames. Both teams play a combined 18 games before Christmas, so having a magic number crack into the 30s is possible by Christmas.

Smith was robbed of an ENG goal by a quick whistle, two games ago too.

I hate to give McDavid credit but I will the guy has to drag the entire dumpster fire team on his back every night and looks miserable doing it. But he keeps trying the guy plays his balls off. Yes he is lazy defensively but who wouldn't be knowing your best efforts are useless.

Look's like Staples is writing Lowe's letters to the fans. Here is 2007's rosy view of the Oilers' future:
Quote:
Hi, this is Kevin Lowe.
After a very eventful week around the hockey club, I wanted to take a moment and communicate to you, our most valued customers, our continued commitment to success.
As I stated last week, our hockey club will always do what we feel is in the best interest of our fans, and in the best interest of building a Stanley Cup championship team here in Oil Country.
Right now, we have a core group of veteran players and a wealth of emerging young talent. Last week's trade brought us two more young players in Robert Nilsson and Ryan O'Marra, and another first round draft choice in this year's NHL draft. They will join players like Pouliot, Jacques, Stortini, Brodziak, and Schremp, just to name a few, as potential members of a championship Oilers club. Certainly, along the way, we will add to our roster through trades and free agency when the right opportunities are there, now that we have the resources to do so. Make no mistake; our plan is to return the Stanley Cup to Edmonton.
We have an exciting future ahead of us all, and we look forward to sharing it with you.
Thanks again for your ongoing support of Oilers Hockey.

I think a valid and interesting discussion is who is the better player Austin Matthews or McDavid.
