Don't think a sign and trade happens. The cap complications of a RFA signing this late make it unlikely.

Agreed. There is no rush for a sign and trade. Sign now and trade at the deadline has essentially the same impact on the Leafs while having far more bidders. They only need cap space next year.

Unless Nylander doesn't want to play a single game for the Leafs and would rather be a Free Agent in the off-season if he doesn't get traded. He will be a FA right?
Edit - nevermind he still remains a RFA. Kinda lame imo. He should be UFA.

He will still be Leafs property.

That is not lame, all the power would always be with the player then. It would be financial chaos. Give me a ridiculous amount of money or I will sit out the season and then sign with whomever.

Entitled? Because he feels he deserves to receive appropriate compensation for the caliber of player he is?
Okay

Or in this case.. if the team lowballs the player, then there is no option for the player but to accept. Play for $1 mil a year or sit out for the next 2 years. He doesn't even get Arbitration rights next year.

Because 7mil per season up from 875K is such a slap in the face...

That's just it, his ask is quite a bit above what his peers are getting. He's had 2 full years with 60 points per year. Nik Ehelrs is a great comparable in age/experience/production, and he signed a long-term deal worth $6 million per year. Nylander is asking far too much for what he is.

Why take less than you think you're worth in any profession, if you had the means to try and get it? Seems like a silly argument.

Fine I'll say it.
He is not worth a penny over $6 million. He is also the only person who thinks he is worth what he is asking. You can use similar NHL players as a comparable.
Good enough?

I respect what Nylander is doing. Stop letting these disgustingly greedy owners exploit athlete after athlete. But then we label them as cancers when they stand up for themselves

Yes, but that does not necessarily make him entitled, delusional maybe.

From his point of view his stats are comparable to Marner and we all know Marner's going to get $8+ million. I can see why he's not willing to accept substantially lower than what Marner's going to get. He doesn't owe the Leafs any discount because he knows they paid for Tavares and they are going to pay for Marner and Matthews. I don't blame him at all for what he's doing here.

I'm in the same opinion that he's not worth the amount he's asking for but the bolded part is what we simply don't know. There will always be GMs who are desperate and would offer a lot for a guy like that. I'd think there would be a handful of GMs who would do $7M+ if they want him to be their next 1st line player on a shallow team. On the Leafs, it's not a good fit with that salary given what they have to do at seasons end. Anyway, we can say all we want here, but ultimately the market decides what a player is going to be paid.

So which team is going to sign him to an offer sheet for the 300k over what the Leafs are offering? 44 minutes to go.
