The federal portion couldn't come out until the city and province's numbers were set because that is the caveat of their allocation model (equal to municipal and provincial contribution) the funds would come from.

So it really should have been kiboshed. It just didn't get enough support all around.
The province won't give money unless there's a plebiscite. The Feds won't commit to the money until the plebiscite is clear, i'm surprised we even got their numbers at all. And the city asked people to vote on something unclear but then run a yes campaign how great this money be.
When council debates on Monday, there is no provincial money and what is the federal commitment now?

I heard an amusing rumor from a friend who has a family member involved in the Bidco that the Treaty 7 (Tsuu'Tina) group apparently wants to pledge $370M and build facilities on T7 lands.
That would be hilarrrrious.

Well I mean the voting was close. 56-43 is pretty narrow, I wouldn't call that a blow out by any means. It might have been a clear victory, but it was close.

56-43 over 300,000 votes is a blowout.

LOL. We would have had even less information if he had his way.

A document obtained by CBC News reveals some of the details of the financial risks that Calgary would face if its 2026 Olympic bid were to succeed.
Among the key risks: Olympic revenue projections assume NHL players will be on the ice.
The details were presented to city council at a closed door meeting on Sept. 11 but the document was withheld by the city.
The redacted version of the report has now been released but key details have still not been disclosed.

Advocacy group the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is praising a whistleblower who leaked municipal documents pertaining to Calgary's potential bid for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
"All costs need to be laid clearly on the table. Calgarians have a right to know the total bill that will come with hosting the 2026 Olympics," said the group's Alberta director Franco Terrazzano in an emailed statement.
"Whoever this mysterious whistleblower is, they deserve a gold medal."
Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said he will be writing to the integrity commissioner to request a full investigation into the leak.

Ironic.
The 2026 Olympics was to be Nenshi's legacy, it'll end up being the end of his political career.

I don't get how these games are anybody's personal legacy. The only person who remembers the mayor of the city when the Olympics where the games were hosted is that mayor. Fewer people will remember who was in office when the host city was selected.

Couldn't this be a good thing? It is money/risk they are putting up. It could provide them with useable facilities and or housing after the fact. Could open our bid up to more Federal funding because of a strong first nation partnership. Could also provide a grass roots sense of pride and ownership/volunteerism within the band that could have a lasting impact on the next generation.
Or am I missing something?

Well Nenshi was really never going to run for mayor in 2021 anyway, and that's the only thing this week could have "killed" as far as his career goes. Whether he wants to do provincial or national after this, who knows?

No it would definitely be a good thing (imo), but it's just hilarious because it would just be such a slap in the face of the ineffectiveness of the Calgary Yes group to successfully push their messaging.
A non-civic Band leadership could push this through and both the Band and the City will benefit. We'll see if it's more than just scuttlebutt however. The doors wide open, as the Band + Fed $ + Province $ is still more inviting than the (only remaining) underfunded Italian bid.
It would also be kind of amazing to see an indigenous First Nations group host the Olympics for various reasons.

I have my doubts that he'll run provincial, the Liberal Party is a dead brand. The NDP might get washed out in the next election and become political kryptonite in the next election.
He could run Federally, but he might want to take a break before he tries to run under the Liberal Brand Federally, they might not do well in Calgary after the next election.
He's kind of cornered a bit political career wise.

being in power too long seems to change a lot of politicians. they forget where they came from. plus I think he always forgets while it's ok to be smarter than people, it's not ok to remind them of it.

Unless he does like Klein and flips to the Conservatives and re-invents them in his image. I don't really see that happening though.
I could see him leading some kind of Liberal/centrist-Conservative & NDP alliance, especially if the UCP embraces too many of its WRP socially-conservative policies. Whether that's trying to save the Alberta Party or creating something new because the Alberta Party's brand is tarnished, that's probably his best bet if he decides to go into the higher levels of government.
