My favourite thing about the Sedins retiring is not having to hear "Henrik!" and "Daniel!" screamed out like a fangirl.
Although, if it's not Ball and Hrudey, I sync my stream to The Fan 960 and save my sanity

I love me some Rasmus Andersson though, and I do think it's inevitable that they move Stone out and bring in a cheaper utility defender to sit in the press box as a Andersson fill in.
But you don't need to be a Stone apologist to give the man some credit.

Yeah the Hamonic injury already showed why the depth is needed.
Personally I really like Andersson but overall Valimaki-Stone has been much better defensively and at suppressing shots than Valimaki-Andersson.
Valimaki-Stone:
TOI- 72 minutes
Corsi For- 58% (83 for, 49 against)
Shots For - (36 for, 32 against)
Scoring Chances- 49% (34 for, 35 against)
High Danger - 45% (17 for, 21 against)
Valimaki - Andersson
TOI- 46 minutes
Corsi For- 44% (36 for, 47 against)
Shots For - 44% (20 for, 25 against)
Scoring Chances- 45% (14 for, 17 against)
High Danger - 54% (7 for, 6 against)

It was at the start of the season, but Peters mentioned before that they felt that they have similar styles and thus wanted to spread that across different lines.

Probably because Tkachuk and Neal are two of our slowest forwards. Peters has talked about trying to pair slower players with faster ones.

And with most players that have their contract the big topic, how much is he overpaid?
He can move up the roster in a pinch
Big
Defensive defenseman
Blocks shots
good in the room
Keeps it simple
Not that old
Those guys are 2.5-2.75M blueliners.

Andersson has been an adventure defensively, but you have to let him sort out the warts because he's the best defenseman on the team when it comes to creating and transition.

I work hard all day and I just want to come home and hear about Leaf hockey. Can't imagine watching BudNet or TMLSN coming away with the opinion that you need MORE of a homer slant
But I guess anyone wondering what it's like to talk hockey in SW Ontario has a good idea.
"Are you going to tell me how great the Leafs are? No? Not interested.
But I'll yammer at you about Gardiner for 30 minutes assuming you watch all our games. You DIDN'T watch the Buds last Tuesday? Do you even watch hockey, bro?"

Yup. It's the same thing for Calgary fans too when they constantly whine about commentators or the panel not giving the Flames love and simply ignore the air time they spend talking about how talented guys like Gaudreau, Monahan, Giordano, etc are. Some people choose to be blind frankly.

Having too many viable nhl defencemen is a problem every team wants to have. Good injury insurance. And if they ever decide they have an excess then Treliving can trade one of Brodie or Stone. There’s no rush to get rid of depth, for a lot of the year we’re likely to have a dman injured. I think having a guy like Stone in the press box is a great sign of depth. No idea what GranteedEV is on about. Strange take and strange timing,

In line with this debate, outside of being younger, under contract for cheaper, what does Andersson bring that Stone doesn't?
Obviously Andersson is the best choice for future consideration. But until he can prove that he can be this good 82 times a year, and that he does have offensive input, its good to keep both around.
Stone, and the defence is a problem for next off season.

I am highly amused that in their third season Leafs fans think that Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner are still rookies.

Finally the quote I've been searching for ... that is Peters letting us in on why the team isn't great defensively.
Quote:
“If our group can wrap their head around the fact we’ve gotta check and check for our chances and be proud of the way we played in our D-zone, I think we have a chance to be real good,” Peters said.
“We’re learning how to manage the puck, taking some of the risk out of our game, and if we continue to do that, we can have a good team by the time it’s all said and done.”
|
Team is slow to roll up the sleeves and do the dirty work required.
The way the forwards played last night, you can see the difference in how a NHL defenseman defends when he's getting the assistance of back pressure from his forward group.
The question now is consistency ... is this a eureka moment? Or is it a big stage moment.

Yup, the GT comments on here pretty well parallel the fan comments of any other team.

There's more salt in our GTs than any ATL most nights.
Very pleased with their play last night in Toronto, and I hope the forwards have found what they need to do on a consistent basis.
My biggest wish right now is to see some of the pure sniping Neal is supposed to bring. I know his play hasn't been great, but it seems to me that he hasn't had much chance to show that side of his play.
