Yeah!
Blame the bloody goalie!

We haven’t had a good goalie in nearly a decade.

Has anyone ever noticed how much Eric Francis resembles Little Foot?

The only difference between this game and the last two is in the net. Flames are absolutely brutal. Rittich is better goalie then Smith at this point, but even amazing goaltending is not going to bail them out with this kind of "effort".

Gio is the only defenceman who can reliably pinch. Peter systems I said a couple times after last game is risk vs reward. Of you execute and maybe get the bounce you have an odd man rush. You fail and you're Kiley to be outnumbered the other way, whether you lose the puck on your own zone or the far blue line.

There shouldnt be tips. The way the Flames just allow guys to set up shop is ridiculous

The fact Trelivihg didn’t talk to Sutter or anyone else like Vigneault was HIGHLY risky in my mind. Not conducting a thorough coaching search was a weird move.
Having said all that I’m not convinced our issues are coaching here.

If you play like thus after off day, why they took that day. Not much energy, not much team play, not prepared.

Yea, I don't get this team. There are times where they've looked absolutely dominant, and then you get games like tonight and the previous two road games where they look atrocious. I still think they have all the pieces to be a competitive playoff-caliber team, but holy hell, what's it gonna take to get them going?
Man, being a fan of this team can be painful. They're so damn frustrating.

Flames need to simplify and just get some greasy goals. Try and stand them up at blue and out work them in defensive zone.
Play ugly and get back into it!

A good goalie finds a way to make that save, even if he'd have been excused for letting it in.
Mike Smith has been absolute garbage for most of his time as a Flame. He started great, but since the All-Star break he has been absolutely terrible. He has a long road to regaining any kind of confidence in net, let alone the benefit of the doubt.
Has D been terrible? Absolutely awful, yes. But time and time again, Mike Smith is rarely there to save the guys a period. If you make a mistake in front of Mike Smith, he will let it in.
Goal #1 was on Smith IMO. Sam could have covered him much better, so he's a pair with Smith on that - but Bennett's poor coverage is only on the scoresheet when your last line of defence is Smith.
Goal #2 was a tip with no one in front, but it would be damn nice to have a goalie that would stop one or two of those
Goal #3 was Smith letting out a rebound, and no one on D helping him out.
Could this be 3-0 with a great goalie in net? Absolutely. I don't think I've had too much great to say about anything the Flames have done tonight.
But night after night, Mike Smith is not the goalie that helps us win. He'll have the odd night here or there that we can hang our hat on for a month, but Mike Smith is not the goalie that wins you much of anything.
|
He’s been terrible. Time to accept it.
