This was as good a situation for the Flames to open the season as possible.

On the road? Check.
Short flight? Check.
Playing against a very weak team? Check.
Lots of rest prior to the game? Check.
No injuries? Check.

And yet this team manages to come up with another pathetic effort to lose comfortably to a crappy Nuck team.

Incredibly sloppy play all around. Looks like there'll still be an adjustment period with Peters as coach. I don't think it's a coincidence Lindholm and Hanifin looked pretty good since they've got more experience under Peters. Felt like we weren't as coordinated in our neutral zone play as we were in the pre-season. When the D are jumping up and forcing turnovers we look great, but if the forwards are sleeping on the backcheck we give up odd-man rushes, and then the D stop jumping and the whole thing falls apart.

Despite the poor play overall there were some encouraging signs from the coaching staff we didn't see last year: Peters shook up the lines to try to get them going, and the PP went with a different breakout early in the 3rd which seemed to work a fair bit better.

Gaudreau finally woke up in the 3rd, and I thought Tkachuk and Backlund got better as the game went on. Score 1 or 2 on the powerplay and that's a totally different game. Feels like a broken record after last year, but I saw more adjustments that game than in 2 years under GG.

It's really hard to understand with all the pieces there. They were sloppier than the preseason even.

First game isn't the be all end all but for a team that's lost 9 straight openers you'd think.... oh never mind.

Good luck to Bill Peters in helping these players unlearn the last two years worth of BS. Whatever PP system is the furthest thing from what they've been doing, please implement that.

Felt like he was on for WAY more than that.

He had way more impact in 10 mins then 14 mins of a man advantage

Bennett is just buried and for his sake should request a trade. If he can’t get more ice when everyone else is playing like trash then he is clearly done here
Oh god

- That power play. Absolutely embarassing. At this point maybe it's time to completely change the units around. Like, completely completely. Like, Monahan-Neal-Lindholm-Brodie-Giordano and Gaudreau-Tkachuk-Backlund-Czarnik-Hanifin.

- Czarnik looks like a good signing. Seems to be more comfortable at the half-wall than Lindholm, who might have too much skill overlap with Tkachuk to be playing on the same unit.

- Valimaki - Stone were absolutely awful. I really hope that's not what we can look forward to this year, because at the very least I was comfortable with Kulak's consistent and solid play last year and was looking forward to Andersson unseating Stone.

- Jankowski and Frolik were also awful.

- Bennett's career is over. The flashy instincts have been successfully coached out of him and we're left with a cookie cutter fourth liner. Sorry, but he was one of our best zone entry guys in his rookie year and the need to get guys dumping pucks and making "the right play" is how you ruin a player.

I’d say his flames career is over not his nhl career. He’s a top six forward on at least15 other teams. Peters refuses to give him ice even when everyone else looked worse. Request a trade if I were him

New coach.

7/18 players were new. Let’s give them more than 1 game.

It’s a process.

By 2023 we may even win a season opener.

Yep, no real excuses today. None at all.
I guess maybe you could say that there are new coaches.

Still, they have to get their act together. And quickly.

Not the end of the world as we should be conditioned for this but a little disappointing that the new coach in game one repeated mistakes of the old coach like having Frolik on the 2nd line (he hasn't been good in this role for two seasons) and Brodie on the powerplay. I'm sure he will learn his lesson but it sucks to give up points like this.

Frolik looked decent tonight imo, quick and had wheels. I thought Backlund was way more sloppy and just looked tired out there

Someone needs to tell Scott Oake that the Sedins are never coming back.

We may have lost on the scoreboard, but I'm pretty sure we won the Corsi battle! Silver linings!

Hahahahahahaha.

Bennett would have trouble being a top 6 forward in the AHL now and you think he’d be one on 15 teams in the NHL
