But it doesn't do much to alter the truth that Winnipeg itself is no good.

THERE ARE CERTAINLY OTHERS AS WELL.
· Winnipeg is high because they are legitimately a good team.
· TB is high because they are probably the best team in the NHL.
· Anaheim likely attracts a lot of action because they have a long history of doing well.
· NYR is high because no one is so deluded to think that in this first year of a rebuild they will accomplish much.
This is not difficult. Why are you struggling so much to grasp the nuance in this?

Ok, then why should the Leafs not be high?

I get it the Leafs are not very good. You don't understand why they would be so high...
If Arizona had added Tavares with that talent you'd have no issue. 105 points with JT added an Matthews/Marner only 20 last season.

I like it when textcritic gets riled up like this.
The whole system works the way it does because most people gambling do so because they want to win money, not because they are simply cheering for their team using their wallet. No doubt you can find inefficiencies in the betting line once in a while but dealing in absolutes that small market teams are always undervalued? I would need to see some hard core data to get behind that. There are a whole lot of people trying to make a living by gambling on sports that would have figured that out by now.

Put my money down for this season on who wins it all. Flames, of course, at 33/1, then droped a little on the Panthers at 40/1 (good odds for a team that has all the makings to do well) and St Louis at 25/1 (again a good team of players but both hoping for goalie help).
We shall see

Just got my Flames for the division bet at +911. I feel almost as good about this one as I did last year's bet.

Because in a Stanley Cup bet you don’t bet on the team you think will win. You bet on the team who you thinks actual odds are better than the posted odds.
You clearly don’t know how to gamble.

You mean you don't bet with your heart you bet with the odds? No wonder I'm broke.

You may have to wait until the Draft for anyone resembling a oiler fan to show their face around here though.

So it turned out that Calgary actually had the best payout odds in the league, for what became true contenders. Did anyone put down any money at the beginning of the season?

I just read through the thread, and it looks like a handful of people made money. Lots of suckers picked the Sharks, though, and BigTuna and his “105-point Toronto Maple Leafs who just added John Tavares” have quietly disappeared into the ether.
Congratulations, winners!

Made 1.6x payout on Flames to win the division on a bet placed a month or so ago.
And have my $100 stanley cup bet which was also placed a month ago. Wish I was sitting at 33:1 odds haha. Placed at 9:1. It has dropped to 8.5:1 the last couple weeks though.
And full craziness, the Lightning to win the cup is currently paying at 2.87 which has to be lowest paying odds rolling into the playoffs for a team ever.
