Really strong stuff from #Flames forward Curtis Lazar after clearing waivers today. Says he is willing to go to AHL if it means playing more: “I’m kind of fed up of being that so-so guy that’s just plugged in here and there. I want to rebuild my game, re-establish myself.”

Good mindset from Lazar, I hope they send him down and his work pays off.

In the last preseason game:
· Gaudreau, Lindholm, and Dube were the only Flames forwards with +20 mins of ice time.
· Backlund, Czarnik, Bennett, Mangiapane, Frolik with +14 mins.
· Jankowski, Tkachuk, Ryan with +12 mins.

That's 8/9 players with +14 mins, and 11/12 players with +12 mins.

In the prior game in SJ:
· No players with more than 19 mins of ice time.
· Backlund, Neal, Lindholm, Monahan, Frolik all with +15 mins.
· Ryan, Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Czarnik with +13 mins.
· Dude and Jankowski with +12 mins, and Bennet registered the lowest ice time with 11:01.

That's 9/9 players with +13 mins, and 11/12. players with +12 mins.

Yes, these are just preseason games, but with how the coaches have structured the lines I am betting that the difference in ice times will be fairly small in the top-nine, and with a lot of that getting made up by special teams assignments. Neal will likely be a fixture on the powerplay, and I also think he is set to get a lot of offensive zone starts with lines 2 and 4 taking most of the defensive zone draws.

Probably correct, but 2005-6 was pretty deep on paper. So was 06-07.

The kid has the right attitude that makes you think he may find his niche in the NHL one day.

His mindset is very mature and he doesn't make excuses. He has a pro mentality, it's really hard not to root for the guy!

I hope he goes down and centres the top line.

I don't think a whole lot can be drawn from preseason ice times. I mean over the course of a season, Neal is the kind of player who tends to need plenty of ice time to get hot. Watching Vegas he'd be invisible for a lot of those minutes, then pot a couple.

Plus I think he'd benefit from Tkachuk and Backlund, while Bennett and Jankowski could use Frolik. I think Czarnik, while impressive in the preseason, still needs to be bottom six to start.

I am fine with the top line getting fewer minutes. Last year the top players got worn out down the stretch. 82 games is a long season. I like the idea of keeping your star players fresh, if you can of course.

Love Lazar's attitude - still think he will be an NHLer one day

I would prefer to see Hanifin on the 2nd PP over Brodie

All in all though, I am really pleased with the choices the organization is making with the roster. Several kids stepped up large - and were given opportunities as a result. This team is really deep, great on the dot, has lots of good PP personnel, good PK guys, a little more grit then last year (though still not enough), way more speed, plays a speedier, more up-tempo style, and forechecks more aggressively.

Basically everything I wanted for Christmas!

Very excited about this season (please hold up, goaltending)

I'm not sure Lazar will get his wish but Hathaway being kept up makes it a little more likely. IMO Lazar would be a pretty decent guy to come down from the press box to play fourth line. More than Hathaway IMO.

Pat on the fan 960 played that 4 minute clip of Lazar.......wow what a kid.
23 years old and he said he just wants to play, contribute in any way he can , wherever he can.

Love this attitude and glad he’s still around.....this kind of stuff has to be contagious and good for the organization.

Very proud of you Curtis .

Love Lazar the person. Great attitude, hard guy not to cheer for.

Not a very good hockey player though. Done very little to show he'll ever be more than what he is now.

Love the attitude from Lazar. He needs to be dominant in the AHL to show he belongs.

Also, a plus for the Stockton-bound players is they get to enjoy the California weather, and the side trips on their off-time would be amazing! Not a bad consolation prize at all.
