Need to get Brodie off that second PP unit. Not sure why he keeps getting put in that 1D-4F unit when it was so terrible with him running it last year.

That's why you have a league like the AHL...its for development primarily, so let your players develop. Something that just wont happen as quickly when sitting in the press box for 30 or 40 or whatever games a year in the NHL.
The point was you could rotate games between Dube, Mangiapane, Czarnik, Bennett and Jankowski so they all get in to ~60 games throughout the season, and reward those that perform best. Everyone stays in game shape as no one sits more than a couple games, it builds internal competition, and it rewards those who earned their spot on the team (with them definitely preferring the NHL pay cheque).

You said Mangiapane has to play in the top 6...so are you also thinking it's detrimental to Dube's progression making the team if he's on the 3rd line or if you knew he'd sit out 20 games this year? I'm guessing not...as it's helpful just being up with the big club and playing on a fairly regular basis. Not sure why it'd be any different if we could do the same with Mangiapane??

Yeah Lazar seems like a great guy - think he would be a great veteran for the young guys in Stockton to play with.

Personally I see this as the Flames opening night lineup - have a feeling they are going 8 d-men to start the season.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Dube-Ryan-Neal
Bennett-Jankowski-Czarnik
Hathaway

Giordano-Brodie
Hanifin-Hamonic
Valimaki-Stone
Andersson-Prout

Smith
Rittich

Good looking lineup. Great for Valimaki and Dube to steal jobs.

To be clear it’s not keeping Mangiapane up is what I consider silly. The suggestion that Mangiapane would be better helped by being scratched as the 13th forward than he would be playing in the AHL is what I thought was silly.

Yeah, say what you want, but Lazar is a really cool guy to have in the organization and I'd love to see him destroy the AHL.

Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
Rittich, also, will begin the season as Mike Smith’s back-up in Calgary.

So I wonder if right now they're considering only playing him for 9 and then sending him down.

Possible scenarios:
- Giving Valimaki 9 games until making a decision. Could go back to Kulak-Stone if Valimaki doesn't command staying up beyond 9.
- Trying to trade Stone to make a RD spot for Andersson but will go Valimaki-Stone until a trade is made because Andersson can't play the left side. Then after that it could be Kulak-Andersson or Valimaki-Andersson.
- Already committed to keeping Valimaki up beyond 9 and that has benefited Stone as they don't want Valimaki playing without a Vet.

So we've got:

Forwards (likely 14): Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Elias Lindholm, Matthew Tkachuk, James Neal, Mikael Backlund, Sam Bennett, Mark Jankowski, Derek Ryan, Dillon Dube, Austin Czarnik, Michael Frolik, Garnet Hathaway, xxxxxxxxx?

Defense (likely 7): Mark Giordano, T.J. Brodie, Travis Hamonic, Noah Hanifin, Michael Stone, Juuso Valimaki, Dalton Prout, and maybe xxxxxxxxx?

Goalies (2): Mike Smith, David Rittich

On paper, these lines have more depth than I’ve seen since becoming a flames fan during the 04 cup run. Now they need to translate that into success.

I'd rather Hannifin run the 2nd PP over Brodie personally.

I sure hope we don't Cameron the #### out of the PP to start the year and then realize in February maybe we should have put "Hamilton" out there as he's quite good.

Tkachuk - Backlund - Czarnik
Bennett - Jankowski - Frolik
please

Both of those combinations showed promise.

Good for Valimaki and Dube. Surprised to see both. I'll be honest, I have no confidence in the goaltending going into the season. I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall for the conversation with Gillies and Rittich.

Yeah, plus IMO Neal is a guy who needs bigger minutes to be effective. I'm quite surprised if he is lower than line two. If this ends up being the case, I predicted badly, as I'm sure someone would have pointed out eventually.

IMO this is the easiest decision they had to make. Both looked equally average and Rittich is on the one way deal while Gillies has a two way deal.

I think it's more a case that one has to pass waivers, while the other doesn't.

edit: Meaning more a waiver case than a 2-way vs. 1-way case.

I think you need to go back further than that.
