I wonder if these 2 would have made it if Gully was still the coach.

The Flames have not employed that motto since the 2015–16 season. This gets badly overblown every year. We as fans get attached to the idea of younger players supplanting NHL vets and seeing rookies barge their way onto the roster. The fact of the matter is that it doesn't happen often. Anywhere. I can't think of a single instance in the last half-decade in which a player has been unjustifiably held back by this organization without some fairly relevant mitigating circumstances getting in the way.

With that said, I am extremely happy about this news. It looked obvious to me in the SJ game that Dube and Valimaki are both NOW NHL players.

Dube would look good in #91 (he was #9 for Canada and #19 for Kelowna)!

^ Also pretty sure that was a marketing slogan, not the actual team mantra though I could be wrong?

Come on, give Gully some credit. Of course they would have made the team. They would have been on the #1 PP with Valimaki centering Dube and Brouwer with Monny in goal and Johnny/Smith on D.

Peluso and Brule would be filling out the bottom 6 on opening night.

And Brodie somehow still on the left side not with Gio.

Im surprised at Valimaki. I thought he was the poster boy for "Looks ready, but we'll let him hone his craft in the AHL"

Dube is a great story. Its funny because he's the first highly touted prospect that we didn't really need to make the team. He just flat out forced his way on.

Backlund, Monahan, Bennett, Jankowski. All guys who made the team, that we secretly hoped would earn a top 6 role in their rookie season. But had varying levels of success.

Dube can just do his thing, surrounded by pretty good players.

While I get that people are happy to see the Flames give rookies a chance, let's not forget they pushed out Lazar and Kulak. Not exactly grizzled veterans

Agreed, definitely a good situation for him.

I think Valimaki showed much better then Anderson personally. Rasmus looked slow and his skating got him into trouble in preseason games. At full speed NHL regular season I could really see him struggling. Hopefully he can improve his skating otherwise he won't be more then a bottom pairing guy imo.

Time to dust off this bad boy. The 2018 prospect rankings.

https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showth...spect+Rankings

Looks like the tradition of number 1 making the team continues.
All the same numbers 1, 2 and 3 were all in the conversation.

1. Juuso Valimaki - 83.41%
2. Rasmus Andersson - 67.45%
3. Dillan Dube - 49.74%

Ya, I agree with this 100%. Is he physically able to get faster? This seems to have been the case for a few seasons in a row now. Maybe he just can't get faster? I wonder if he has looked into getting a skating coach to help with his technique and improve his speed that way. I don't know, maybe he just doesn't have it in him to train really hard. You would think he would have been able to make the jump this year. He is a smart player, fun to watch but he isn't fast enough for the speed of the NHL IMO.

Dube and Valimaki both had the benefit of being impressive in the previous preseason as well. Dube was ahead of every other rookie forward except Jankowski. Valimaki was better than all of the other D prospects.

Very little chance Stone gets moved, as having a steady veteran paired with Valimaki makes a lot of sense.

How much has his skating improved since we drafted him ? I really hope he is already using a skating coach. Hasn't Tkachuk been skating with a highly touted skating coach ? His skating has improved immensely.

Awesome news, and totally warranted!

IMO, Dube, Valimaki, Mangiapane and Andersson ALL played well enough to make the team. Just not that many spots available.
