Can someone update the thread title already?

It'll be interesting to see how the mail order services change due to legalization. If pricing is better than AGLC/etc, could see them remaining popular for bulk purchases, and especially if they remain the sole source of edibles early on.

Can't see the feds cracking down on them finally now that the product is legalized. They left them alone during prohibition, so to finally crack down for marginal tax revenue would seem odd after ignoring criminal activity for so long...

Here's the problem with that argument.
The Feds have ignored them because they were breaking a law that was coming off the books in relatively short order.

Once legalization starts, the law they are breaking, ie tax evasion and selling without a license are here to stay. So slightly different situation.

If they don't shut down mail order without a license, then they are basically saying the licensing system in place is meaningless. They can't do that, so they'll have to clamp down on the mail order stuff.

The Feds also, realistically, wanted everyone ordering it through the mail anyways. That’s why it’s so easy.

The companies pay taxes and have your name and address. That’s all they care about.

And that argument (taxes) is the most plausible for them cracking down now, but the MOM stores have been around longer than Liberal's push to legalize, so I'm not quite buying that argument.

My money is on they'll continue to operate in a grey space even after October and will remain busy enough through bulk and edible sales.

I've heard through a few different people they are going to crack down hard on the online guys. There's a pretty huge grey area, and if the government is going to charge what I think they're going to charge for taxes, it would make sense to go after people operating in this grey area that don't pay any taxes whatsoever.

To put it in to perspective, I know guys that sell at around $2/gram in the black market. The government (supposed) tax level is $7/gr, and that's just TAX. So if the online guys are allowed to operate it's a massive amount of tax revenue the government loses, and if there's one thing the government loves it's collecting taxes.

I would be shocked if there isn't a huge crackdown on grey market sales.

I would also be shocked if there isn't huge weed shortages, and people do it anyway through a storefront.

It's a total sh--show. No one REALLY knows what's happening, not even the government.

We should start up a thread in the Food and Entertainment sub-forum called "Music to smoke to" in preparation for the big day. I know I'll be firing up a little Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant!

I'll be celebrating with Portishead and Massive Attack! Not that that's different than any other day. Maybe I'll throw in some Pink Floyd too for the special occasion.

Kraftwerk!

And Zappa is extra-hilarious in these situations.

He said he's gonna wake up early, have an edible, and tune into CBC Newsworld for the day.

Without a verified link I'm going to call BS on this. Having followed the excise tax process and hearing constantly that they were putting it at $1 I would be absolutely shocked to hear that a tax was being levied that would bring the cost of legal cannabis to nearly double the average cost of what illicit cannabis sells for on the user level.

Hey, trust me I hope it's all BS. But the guys I speak with (daily) are in the industry and all have a lot of money in it.

I think it just goes to show that no one (not even the government at ANY level) knows for sure wtf is going on. It's like they just threw a bunch of paper in the air on a Friday afternoon and said "f-it, let's figure it out later"

In fairness that does sound plausible considering its a Trudeau Government in charge.

$7/gram tax does not sound plausible, defeats the entire purpose. This is incorrect info.

So, once this is in place.. what is the chance that the next government that comes to power will just make it illegal again?

Virtually zero. A strong majority of Canadians supported it and was one of the reasons Trudeau won the election. Why would anyone campaign on reversing it? Particularly if you're talking about conservatives. If anything they would be better to run on making it more open-market.
