I encourage everyone on this board to save this post for later. In fact I think it should be pinned to the top.

I can’t believe how little they gave up for this. Even the picks are going to be so low in each round that they might as well be in a lower round.

Pavelski
Couture
Kane
Karlsson
Burns
Jones

Those are 6 all-stars on one team.

Don't forget Vlasic.

Vlasic is gonna be real underrated with Karlsson and Burns getting the attention. A top 4 of Karlsson, Burns, vlasic and Braun looks real nice

Oh definitely agreed. Already a lot of factors are against the team. The location of the arena, sub-par performance, lack of current stars, smaller city, internal cap, meddling owner. A bad return for arguably their biggest star ever (I would put Alfredsson a smidge higher), is icing on the #### cake.

You know what's super interesting is the two approaches by the Calgary Flames and Ottawa Senators:

Flames in 2013: We are rebuilding, but are going to keep a 29 year-old franchise defencemen on the team to help foster the right culture of support, hardwork, high expectations, and respect.

Ottawa senators in 2018: We are rebuilding and thus have to trade a 29 year-old franchise defencemen so we can get assets that will help jump start the rebuild.

Fascinating...the flames were competitive after one year of rebuilding and after five years are stanley cup contenders (not favourites) with the now 35 year-old defenseman still the heart and soul of the team. Will be interesting to see where the Senators are in five years.

I wonder how many seats they remove from the arena this year in order to get sell outs.

This deal makes the Sharks clear favorites in the pacific. Funny that the Sharks trades for both Hoffman and Karlsson this summer (even though Hoffman was brief)

Colorado fans are likely happy

They should fold and move to Quebec.

Not quite the same situation aside from their age and position. We don't know Karlsson's capabilities to lead, and we don't know what the Sens are trying to do. They very well may have some leaders in the room, but from a development standpoint you can't strip the full team as some guys need to stick around to develop others skills. These two situations aren't alike as there are two very different depth charts, needs, and even leagues back then. While the Flames are much better today, they arguably had more assets back then to work with too.

You can’t really know that now can you?

I’d say they have the potential to be. With so much parity in the league the improvements they made at forward and potentially in coaching can easily vault from them from non-contender to contender.

I’m half sharks fan living down here so it’s funny reading through this. Wilson has done this his whole career. I remember the Thornton trade in 2005 and season tix holders kind of in the know instantly thinking it meant Michalek and/or marleau going to Boston. Nope. How bout Sturm primeau and brad Stuart. Brad Stuart leaving hurt the most.

EK cost him a song. And very good chance he resigns. Why can’t calgary get in on these? The cost is not that bad. Hamonic is low brow and didn’t cost much less. Contract is important obviously. But you make it work for a guy like this.

I suspect that's a real possibility. It would save them the trouble of finding money for a new arena, and wouldn't mess up the divisional alignments at all. Besides, M. Péladeau (or whoever wound up owning the franchise) would have a free pass for at least five years on any dumb moves the team made: ‘Hey, at least I'm not Melnyk!’

Simply put, you can't make it work because of salary cap constraints. I don't think it's arguable to state that Karlsson is a franchise dman. But when you have so many guys under contract, and young talent in the future that has to be re-signed, it makes it harder to justify making a deal for Karlsson for one season, and if you want more beyond that, you have to move out one of the young guys assuming Karlsson stays. I guess GM's are hired to make those tough decisions, but on a team like the Flames and their current status, I don't think it'd be possible. SJ can eventually walk away from Thornton and a few others to make room. I don't think it works out for Calgary in the same way.
