This likely foreshadows that Pavelski and/or Thorton are gone after this season.

So, If the Sharks trade Karlsson during the season to an Eastern team, and also go on to win the Stanley Cup this year, the picks going to Ottawa become:

2019 Second Rounder
2020 First Rounder
2021 First Rounder
2022 First Rounder

I mean, those conditions are pretty far fetched, and not likely to happen, but theoretically...

I feel bad for Sens fans. It's going to take a long, long time to recover from this dumpster fire of an off season.

Sharks are going to be scary good

This isn't a good deal for Ottawa, but if it's true that none of this is contingent on Karlsson re-signing with San Jose, it could blow up in the Sharks' face very badly.

Precisely. It would have been terrible for Treliving to move another 1st for a player who'd either bounce after one year or eat up way too much cap space in forthcoming seasons.

The Sharks are just two seasons removed from a Cup Final appearance, and are in a different situation from the Flames. If they don't go deep in the playoffs and don't re-sign EK, they'll have essentially lost some decent players and 1st/2nd-rounders for, what, regular-season success? Yeah, they've never tasted that before.

but if they won the cup if would be worth every one of those picks.

Except if the Sharks trade EK to a team in the east, you have to assume that they are getting at least a first back.

I'm not confident Thornton will be able to play much longer regardless of the team situation. His injuries have really been adding up

Also not likely that they trade him away if they are in any way looking like a cup contender.

Erik Karlsson is the 3rd highest paid defenseman... on his team.

I think both of those guys are just getting older. I always think of Pavelski as being the next wave of players for the Sharks, but he's 34 now. The Sharks are probably just trying to make a run while they still have scoring depth playing to a reasonable level. This could be a thank you to Thornton to give him one last shot at the cup too.

Brent Burns is 33 as well. Could be lots of turn over in SJ over the next couple of seasons.

I looked at a couple games that don't involve Habs or Leafs during the week and they look to have 7 - 8k sold and I honestly don't see more than a smattering of further sales or walk ups happening at this point. Plus, how many of those are season ticket holders that won't actually show up to most games?

There'll assuredly be some comical crowds this season.

You do know that they don't spend to the cap right? They have an internal cap and if I'm not mistaken, haven't ever spent to the cap.

I think what was meant by the previous poster is that the monetary relief they get for a year of rebuild has some value, especially if they have an internal cap.

That could be… but it may be more than offset by the ticket sales they'll lose for years to come. It's going to be hard to win their fan base back after this debacle.
