Wow. If that's the return, I wonder how worse off the other offers from interested teams were. I'm guess the fact that he needed an extension was a big risk.

That being said, I wonder if Karlsson demanded a list of small teams and hand-cuffed Dorion to some extent.

How does San Jose keep doing this. That defense is unreal.

So you know when we flame people for throwing in a bunch many low quality pieces with a 1st round pick for a top player?

This is that exactly.

This feels like the Sens ran out of time to pull a trigger on a trade before camp started and took whatever was left on the table.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
There is not an Erik Karlsson extension as part of this deal.

I'm assuming this was the best deal they could get and maybe shows that teams weren't ready to go all in for one guaranteed year of Karlsson. Could they have got more by holding on until the season started and a contending team maybe lost a key defenseman? Hard to say but the Senators kind of bungled this up and put themselves in a position where his value may be declining the longer it took to trade him.

Here are the conditions per the Sens:

Quote:
The deal includes the following:

Ottawa receives San Jose's first-round choice in either 2019 or 2020 (not lottery protected); if the Sharks miss the playoff in 2018-19 it will be a 2019 selection, otherwise it will be in 2020.

Ottawa receives a second-round choice in the 2019 draft from San Jose (which will be the higher of the two picks the Sharks currently own, the Florida Panthers and their own);

The deal also includes two conditional picks:

Should the Sharks sign Karlsson to a contract extension, Ottawa receives San Jose's second-round selection in 2021, which would upgrade to a first-round selection (not lottery protected) if San Jose reaches the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.

If Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season, the Senators will receive an additional first round pick from the Sharks no later than 2022.

Ottawa gets players, picks AND cap space. People rarely seem to weigh that last part.

It is a small but important point.
We're talking about a Norris defenseman versus a borderline 2nd/3rd pairing guy. There is no justification to be made here, the Sens got hosed and unfortunately so did the Flames, in hindsight.

Competition breeds excellence. Treliving, Peters, and the Flames players need to roll up their sleeves and get to work as they can still win the division if they can put everything together and the goaltending holds up.

As bad as the GM looks, this must have been the best offer on the table, everyone knew Karlsson was for sale, surprised no teams valued him more than this.

How is cap space in any way valuable to them this year?

I guess if they use it to take on other teams' bad contracts, but it's Melnyk. He's not going to spend money that way, it seems to me.

Karlsson & Burns will be fun to watch. I really feel for Sens fans though.

Sens are an internal budget team in the midst of a rebuild.

Cap space not super valuable to them as I don't see them taking on a bunch of salary in return for picks.

Is Karlsson going to sign with San Jose long-term? If Karlsson gets at least $10 million that will be $25 million for their top 3 defensemen next season. The Sharks forward group could be thin up front with Couture and Thornton being UFAs this coming off-season. Not sure if paying $25 million to three guys on defense is the best way to go.

HockeyDB links:

To Ottowa:
Chris Tierney
Dylan DeMelo
Josh Norris
Radolf Balcers

To San jose:
Francis Perron
Erik Karlsson

Norris is the Sharks 2017 first rounder. Nothing else to write home about.
