Best cash probably still comes from the Oilers, if they are able to liberate some more cap.

Best cash probably comes from forcing a trade at this point. Clearly the Oilers are lowballing him because Chia painted himself into a corner and has no easy answers to liberate cap space. So the only leverage the Greasers have left is to play chicken and hope he signs whatever they put in front of him once he's missed a few games.
If I were Nurse's agent I'd advise him to sign for one year only, and publicly demand a trade out of that hell hole. The mess they've created is only going to get worse over time, which is hilarious.

That's quite a fall. From a 1-way contract on cup winner in a great city to a PTO on the worst in the worst.

If I was Sakic, I'd consider throwing an offer sheet on par with Hanifin's contract at Nurse. The Avs have Ottawa's first and third rounders next year (which should be better than their own), so the cost isn't as bad for Colorado as it would be for other teams.

Sucks for Chaisson. Maybe he'll use it as a showcase for other teams like Versteeg

I suspect there is some form of unwritten code in play, but also think that most NHL GMs don't view Nurse as a player who will maximize the value of a contract that would be required to extract him from Edmonton. The Oilers will probably match anything in the range of $4.0–4.5 m both short- and long-term. Does he project to be worth anything more than that? I would say not.

By that logic, we can expect Chiasson back on the Flames in a couple of weeks.

With Nurse holding out, surely the Oilers could find some experienced blueline help in Nicklas Grossman.

I think that is what happens when players get old (Stajan [34], Versteeg [33], Wideman [35]) or who were never that good to begin with (Bouma, Chaisson).

Exactly. Would I be that happy about paying a #4 dman $4M per season? And give up a 2nd rounder to do it? No, I don't think so. No reason to rock the league boat to put yourself in that situation.
I mean, if even the Oilers can't see themselves paying him that much, why would any other team? Of course cap space is a factor but if it was that easy I think they'd have done it already.

Not sure if it's "can't see themselves" so much as they have no cap space.

Chiasson went to Washington originally on a PTO as well.

This. The Oilers don't want to pay Nurse over $4 million right now, but they will if forced and try to make it work.
The only offer sheet that has a chance of working has you giving up at least a first and third, plus a massive overpayment on the contract itself. With or without an unwritten code, that's just bad asset management.
