You just know Ottawa is going to eff that up badly.

Is Dallas still in the running for EK?

There was some thought over the summer that SJ was looking to make a play for Karlsson also.

At worst probably a pretty good deal for Vegas. Not having to part with a #1 or with Glass is pretty big.

Would you have said that in 1995 when the Flames traded Joe Nieuwendyk for Jarome Iginla?

i realize this should probably go in the trade rumors thread but my tin foil hat theory is that Ottawa is getting Vancouver involve in the EK sweeps as Aquilini/Gagliardi have a dislike for one another given their lawsuit over buying the Canucks. If you get two egos involved in a bidding war Dorion might actually do OK on a return.

Everyone would have said that as Iggy was an untested junior player and Newy was a star.
It certainly worked out well for the Flames obviously, but for every Iggy that works out, there are tons that don't.

It was obvious that Bergevin and Pacioretty were ready to move on from one another, so the fact that the Habs got anything of value rather than him walking is pretty solid.
It looks worse for Vegas when you factor in what they traded last year for Tatar.
|
I agree that it's fairly equal but I think the return is akin to a deadline deal in a soft seller's market.
MTL should have received more back for a full year of a consistent 30+ goal scorer who is likely to re-sign with the new team.
Also, I'm not pleased that Vegas got better as a result of the trade, which means tougher intra-divisional competition for the Flames.

Honestly, I'm still reeling from the fact that Bergevin didn't get fleeced. It's a miracle for Habs fans I'm sure.

Vegas also gives up on Nick Suzuki to make this happen.

Neal is not the player Pacioretty is/was. I like both guys a lot, but Pacioretty is a much superior player if he bounces back to his career averages.

Suzuki is a former #13th overall pick who was named a top 30 prospect in the Athletic's off-season prospect ranking.
Parting with their own 1st in this draft would have probably been a better move than trading Suzuki.

I think ‘preposterous ‘ is a bit of an exaggeration. It depends on what you think last season was for VGK. A fluke? Indicative of what they truly are? Somewhere in between? I tend to think it is more in between, but if I were management I would be extremely cautious about thinking the window is now.
If memory serves, Vegas has traded away a 1st, two 2nds, a 3rd, and a highly regarded 1st round prospect(Suzuki), for Max Pacioretty. Trading away those kind of assets will significantly impact the future of your franchise. I think it is reasonable, given that VGK have only been around for a season, to say it puts their long term success into question.

Marc Bergevin said Vegas was given permission to talk to Pacioretty before the trade was completed, so they had to know this extension was happening in order to include Suzuki in the deal.

Given the other contracts going around, got to wonder why Pacioretty would sign that one. Brings him to just under 35, so his last chance at a real long-term high valued contract.
Easily a number of teams would have given him a longer contract that brought him to 36-37 or so. Another bad year or injuries could have been costly, so a guaranteed 28M is nothing to scoff at, but a bounce back year and he left a lot on the table not going to UFA.

How does Vegas keep signing guys to reasonable term like this? I would've thought patches would get 6 years easy. Same with stastny and marchessault, just great contracts.

Four years, $7M AAV. Keys here are VGK avoid lengthy term and Pacioretty gets a premium AAV in a tax-favorable state for his (financially) career-defining contract.
