That seems likely, but it should also not come as any surprise. Tkachuk is banking on a big year and setting his projected value on the basis of what he feels capable of this season, while the Flames are almost certainly fixed on what he has accomplished to date. Both sides are likely to remain close to their starting offers until late spring or summer 2019.

I know Treliving and Tkachuk’s camp will get it done. Hopefully Treliving can work his magic and somehow get a cap-friendly long-term deal done.

I could see Tkachuk being pretty savvy/tough in contract negotiations though. At least more than your average young player. I know that agents handle most of the negotiating with management but I think Tkachuk would not be the type of person to feel pressured to sign if contract talks go long or aren’t complete by the time training camp starts next year. He carries himself like a seasoned veteran at such a young age because the NHL has been a part of his life for so long. That will probably also apply to his negotiations. His dad has been through lots of contracts so Matthew will probably not be as phased by any tough contract negotiation tactics. Plus growing up in a rich, professional sports family could mean he has a different perspective on what a fair contract is for himself. Knowing his dad made “X” amount per year as a pro player could make him expect “X+” amount per year. Of course this is just speculation.

I know it will get done either way but if there was any young player on the team that could somehow counteract the Treliving wizardry... I think it’s Tkachuk.

Everything he says leads me to believe that he wants to sign a nice long term deal. Hopefully he signs for 8!

I think some of us here can sense it, but there is something about Matt that we have not seen in awhile on some of our dominant teams. Theoren Fleury used to be able to get the ball rolling either by his play or his swagger. Whether it was verbal, or on the ice, that energy carried over into the way the team fought for everything. Matt seems to understand this, and that is partly why we are seeing him open up more about the bigger picture, the team and individual "expectations" this season.

On wanting to get something done long term; I think he is being assertive and letting everyone know he really wants to be a Flame. If we had not drafted M.Tachuk I could see this team feeling like something was missing. He has that, "no fear of speaking up and rocking the boat". I think in the future if you see teams taking liberties on Johnny or other players Matt is going to be the guy who drives the team. I believe we are going to see a different Flames team this season. I think the expectations of this group should be nothing short of being at the top of the standings all year round, while proving they can beat anyone who gets in the way.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it and it might be due to the divide over who our 3rd line centre will be this season but it doesn't seem like Tkachuk classifies Ryan as a top 9 forward..

Maybe out of respect to Frolik he did not classify them as top 6 even though that is where they are likely playing.

He’s his fathers son and is going to go for big money. It’s maybe a good time to add Tkachuk to my fantasy team....determined bugger is likely going to light it up in a contract season.

The Reddit insider that's been talked about a lot recently with a Tkachuk update:

Quote:
Flames offered Tkachuk $4.5 million on a long term deal. Tkachuk camp wants $7 million on a long term deal.

Sides weren't close and that is why they've decided to wait each other out. Still a good relationship and I think both sides aren't in a rush.

Realistically both sides a little extreme which is to be expected in negotiations. I think they settle close to $6.25 on a long term deal.
If true, a Flames lowball and Tkachuk's ask of $7M aren't insane in the slightest. A long term contract with an AAV starting with a 6 sounds pretty spot on.

The middle ground would be exactly where Dougie's AAV was at, 5.75 a year.

My prediction is that his stock increases after a good season and they settle at $6.25m for 8 years.

My best guess would be that he gets the Gio and Gaudreau number 6,750,000 x 8.

Put that against the 14M projected cap space and the Flames will have 7M leftover to pay a starting goalie and to renew Bennetts contract.

I agree.

I think the best comparable would be Dylan Larkin's $6.1M AAV contract. He scored 0.77 points/game and Tkachuk scored 0.72 points/game. (0.72/0.77)(6.1) = 5.7 so I think you're bang on.

If I were the Flames, I'd offer 8*6 and see if the Tkachuk camp would be willing to sign now. Unfortunately, Tkachuk's camp would probably smell blood and demand more. But I'd really want to just get a contract done before next season if I were the Flames. I think Tkachuk will have a big season. He might get 65 points.
