Default Tkachuk on contract extension talks

Matthew Tkachuk, on contract talks: "I'm not really going to talk about that stuff during the year. It's just in the way. I feel like it's something that doesn't really need to be... I don't know if we'll be talking throughout the year." #Flames

@AAVickers Tkachuk (cont): "They were saying something about if something isn't figured out this summer then wait until next summer, which is fine. I just want to focus on hockey this year because I feel like it gets in the way of doing something special with this group." #Flames

Sounds like nothing will get done until next summer

"Something special"

He's young, but he'll learn.

Hopefully we will need to pay him more next summer.

That Conn Smythe trophy he wins is going to make his contract expensive.

Yeah....on the one hand I'm concerned about what happens if he has a killer season and we see a jump in his price, but on the other hand that would mean he becomes an even better player and the Wizard will just have to work his magic.

This reminds me (wanted to bring this up somewhere) of Ryan Pinder's ridiculous take on Tkachuk's contract.

Pinder suggests you can't play Tkachuk with Monahan & Gaudreau for fear that he will light it up, the team will win, and you'll have to pay Tkachuk too much money next year.

So basically he's saying that to keep Tkachuk's cap hit low the team should make sure he doesn't play with and gel with two top tier players, underperform and take the chance of winning less this season? Bizarre.

Interestiing that in one breath we will criticize Pinder for saying this and then ridicule the Oilers for playing Draisaitl with Mcdavid in his contract season.

Not saying i agree with Pinder but if he plays on the top line and puts up monster points then there will be haters that say there were lots of other options.

Nothing would make me happier than Tkachuk going out and earning a massive contract.

Damned if you do I suppose.

I guess what gets me is that he's suggesting you hamper the team's ability to win.

A team that has had limited success over the past decade shouldn't be considering an option that further limits their chances of success for fear that they may have to pay for it.

Just thought it was an odd take.

Stunting a players development by withholding opportunities, for the purposes of having a more cap friendly salary, is an unacceptable act.

Interesting hearing Tkachuk's thoughts on Bill Peters and his "hard" reputation: “I don’t know if a hard coach is the best description but I think an intense coach, a guy that expects (a lot)."

(Tkachuk cont'd) "...And, without talking to him about it too much (before the season), I want him to expect great things from us and anything less than that would be a disappointment."

More great stuff from Tkachuk on the Flames' changes: “It’s not like you’re just bringing in guys that may or may not play. We’re bringing in two top-nine forwards, a top-four ‘D,’ and a full new coaching staff....

...You don’t really know who you’re going to end up playing with or what the lines are going to be or the pairings. I looked at the schedule and we have a ton of preseason games so that will be good for us to hammer down a nice little roster.”
I can't believe how lucky we are to have this kid on our roster. He talks like he's been in the league for years.

He really has been though. The kid grew up in NHL locker rooms, surrounded by some big time leaders.

You have to give kudos to his parents as well, even while growing up with millions of dollars, private schools, the best clothes/things etc. somehow both these kids seem very driven, honest and kind.

To see the way Matt interacts with kids is extremely refreshing, not a plastic bone in his body.

I know that the debate rages about who should become the future captain between him and Monahan debate rages on, but Tkachuk should be it. I believe Tkachuk not only says the right things but leads by example on the ice. He is an absolute menace to play against. Hell, even give him an A this year for some added responsibility.

I get it, he’s a great player after two seasons of watching. I still think you have to wait and see what he does this season before throwing 7 plus million at him for long term. If he’s a 60 point guy, is that worth 7 plus these days? He’s great but I don’t see him worth more than Johnny. He’s more on par with Backlund at the moment. He has potential, and paying for potential is a huge gamble. I’d be happy if BT waits to see what we have until after this season

These comments lead me to believe he and the team have discussed an extension, and are nowhere close number wise.
