Your reading comprehension is poor. Nobody is rushing to Brouwer's defense about his hockey playing, which is where all the vitriol you mention stemmed from. People are pointing out that even though it didn't work out with him here, there's no need for the local rag to write something so classless and splash it all over the city.
You can't really go into a convenience store or a fast food joint without seeing the front page of the Sun somewhere, and considering the picture (anything Flames related is going to draw the attention of Flames fans), lots of people were going to read that headline whether they wanted to or not.
Considering that most of us got what we wanted here, we could handle it with a bit of grace. There's no need to taunt the guy on his way out of town, and to do it so publicly is downright pathetic and embarrassing.
I'd like to say that I'll boycott the Sun henceforth, but since I haven't bought or read their crap since people needed the Sunday TV guide, I have no leverage. All I know is that I wont give a flying fata when they finally go under as a business.

My reading comprehension is fine, thank you. I'm not talking about anybody defending Brouwer's impact as a hockey player. I'm talking about the double standard as many individuals on this board have ripped Brouwer for over a year talking about firing him into the sun, etc. The sun headline is tasteless, but it echo's the sentiments of what many here have wrote over the past 12 months.

Yeah well comments on a fan board are the kinds of things players can choose to read or not read. It's not even close to the same as his face and accompanying stupid ass comment being posted in print on thousands of news stands and restaurant tables across the city.
But yeah, I get your really obtuse point.

We hold businesses to a higher standard than ourselves because a post on a community forum doesn't hold the weight or have the viewership that the front page of our city's most popular paper does.

Hope that many others do. I wonder whether the Flames might also quietly have a word with the editors, given that this casts the city and the team in a very negative light.

This isn't a hill that I need to die on, but I guess I just find it strange that people are fine posting similar things on a public forum under an anonymous name, yet feel outraged when a newspaper says the same things.
I find it's just best to go by the rule that if you wouldn't say it to somebody's face then don't post it online either.

I don't post here often. Also I am not a fan of Troy Brouwer as a Calgary Flame. And I was happy when I found out yesterday that he was put on waivers to be bought out... However, as a proud Calgarian and Flames fan I am very frustrated/disappointed with the headline of that article. I have sent the Sun a message and I encourage others to do the same.
I don't want a second rate publication making this great city look second rate. I don't want this city's media to have a poor reputation, discouraging players from coming here. We already have Francis, he may be play devils advocate to get clicks, but he is nothing compared to this garbage.
This is Canada, treat others with respect and have some empathy. I may work with people who don't pull their weight and frustrate the people around them. But we don't shame them in front of their peers, family or in this case the entire city.

I don't think it's unreasonable that we, as a community hold ourselves to a higher standard than the Sun who have proven time and time again that this is their kinda of shtick.

Especially since it wasn't like Brouwer wasn't trying. The game just passed him by like it does all NHL players at some point.

The Sun is trash and that was a trash headline. But the amount of people bringing attention to it, and in turn the Sun, seems to have served their purpose.
I barely even remember there is still print media. Instead of the faux outrage, people would be better served to ignore it and let them continue their side into irrelevancy.

Exactly! He entered a mutual UFA deal with the flames that both parties thought he was worth and would perform to. But sometimes these things just don't work out. Whether it was age, or injury or fit, it was not for a lack of effort! The publication should show some respect.
Even CP was better. Although most of us were glad to see him get bought out, most wished him the best.

This. We should never hold the Sun to a higher standard than ourselves. Or rather the other way around. We should, of course, hold ourselves to a higher standard than a tabloid rag.

It's the only newspaper in town, published under two names out of the same newsroom. That is the state of newspaper reporting in this city.

Same owner, same newsroom, same reporters, same editorial staff. Only the columnists and the slant are different.
Anyone who's mad at the Sun about this should be mad at the Herald, because they are exactly the same people. The Postmedia crowd that bought the Sun aren't used to running tabloids; they are trying to replicate the Sun's schtick without understanding it, and without having any feel for what tabloid readers will or won't swallow. It's a bad imitation of a bad product.
Meanwhile, the world moves on to media that don't think the public has an obligation to buy whatever garbage they choose to sell.

I don’t disagree with you for the most part. But this is what is so annoying about any fan board on any topic in general. Many of us on here sure do think highly of our opinions. View them as more educated than the average talking head or sports writer, feel the opinions should be more valued and even should be taken more seriously by the Flames than any other opinions (the general sentiment that the true Flames fans post live here).
But when it comes to accountability for what we say and post we expect the media to be held to a higher standard. I get the logic as to why (paid, distribution, visibility, etc) but we can’t get on our high horses about just how important the opinions are on this site but then give ourselves outs for the hurtful and sometimes outrageous opinions we post on here. Players and management are well aware of all forms of media and info now. Feeling we can say what we want and shouldn’t feel responsible but a need tighter should is the definition of hiding behind a keyboard. At least in print media you know you have to be held accountable for what you say.
