When I think of him I think of how warm his presence is and the way he treats everyone with the same level of respect, even to those who did not reciprocate it. Everything he did was done with class and humility, grace and perseverance. I'll never forget the way he made me so proud to be a Flames fan, and how every team wished they had their own Iginla because of how rare it truly it is to find all these things packed into one human.
Kind of makes me wonder if theirs any current Flames that could have potential to be this generations Iginla, and all I can think of is maybe Tkachuk.

Truly the GOAT for the franchise. I feel privileged for having had the opportunity to grow up watching his entire career unfold. Flames fans were lucky to have a player like that wearing the jersey for so many years. A real icon.

The guy on the roster that is even close to bringing what Iggy did is Gio, but less so in pretty much every facet. Peak Gio = top ten defenceman. Peak Iggy = best player in the league. But Gio is a great leader in his own right, plays hard every game, has talent to back up the work ethic. will drop the gloves (though not an initiator like Iggy could be).

Iggy was never "best in the league", but I do believe he was the most complete player for a long while.

There was a small window where he was the best. And if he was the most complete player, that's a pretty good argument for being the best right there.
NHL players voted him the best in the league in 2002, when he won the Ross and Richard trophies. Should've won the Hart.
Trevor Linden said "you are the best player in the league" to Jarome when they shook hands in Linden's last game. And it was true.

Bertuzzi was 3rd in the league in scoring that year, was he 3rd best in the league? Was Naslund 2nd best?

First, McDavid probably is the best pure hockey player in the league. If not now, he will be in the next couple of years. That's obvious just from watching him.
Second, Iggy did have a great year. And another. And another. To compare him to the likes of Bertuzzi and Naslund is asinine. He had better longevity and a better peak. He killed it at the Olympics, led the league in scoring, and dragged his team to the final, all in a three year span where he truly was the best.

Strange, I remember a year or two around that season where experts often argued that he was the best player in the game at the time.
This isn't homerism. Hockey minds generally agreed he was at the top of the pyramid for a while.

No? 121 points in 81 games the previous year isn't good enough? Consistently being top 5 in any category?
Sakic being consistently in the top 5 doesn't count either?
For as many statisticians that there are on this site, an outlier year quantifying a player as best in the league is a pretty shallow argument.
Regardless if he's a frqnchise player close to our hearts or not.

I think you can absolutely make the argument that Jarome was the best player in the world for stretches and particularly in the 02 and 04 seasons.
You could probably argue he wasn't, but I don't think you're doing a very good job, and in a thread like this, the burden is definitely on you.

There are different ways to consider 'best in league' but by many parameters you could make that argument that he was in 2001-2002. another way is to look at a longer body of work. I believe he was a Hart finalist 3 times between 2002-2008 (finishing 2nd twice), so while we can quibble whether he was actually ever THE best in the league I believe there was a strong argument that he was in 2001-2002 or in the longer picture from 2001-2008 he was frequently in the discussion as the league's best player if you prefer a longer view
