somebody mentioned this previously, but i don't feel bad for anyone - this is a business and a tough one at that.
Did people feel bad for Kulak and Wotherspoon when Calgary drafted Andersson?
Did anyone feel bad for Andersson, Kulak or Wotherspoon when Calgary traded for Stone? or feel bad for Stone when Calgary traded for Hamilton?
At the end of the day, this is about the organization getting better.
Calgary's roster looks a heck of a lot better today than it did at the end of the season.
its up to the players to make the most of the opportunities they get... the best organizations, like the Patriots, are always moving forward, they aren't waiting for players that can't keep up to the pace.

The guy I feel bad about is Foo. He gets lured to Calgary as a free agent out of college because there are only 3 or 4 guys ahead of him on the Flames depth chart. Plays himself onto the roster in the final weeks of the season. Now there are 6 or 7 guys ahead of him.
Foo could use another season in the A - he had a solid but unspectacular first season as a pro. The cold start didn't help.
This is how I view the forward turnover:
Ferland is gone, Neal in.
Jagr is gone, Lindholm in.
Stajan is gone, Ryan in.
Versteeg is gone, Czarnik in.
I also think the Flames are done using the 13th and 14th forwards as pure injury sub-ins, from the sheer amount of forwards added in the last two weeks. You need them to be more than just a warm body now with all this depth. You need to be able to switch them comfortably if someone's on a cold streak. If your 13th and 14th forwards are Brouwer and Hathaway you're in decent shape.

If a young players first thought is: “Poor me, there are too many players for me to be gifted an opportunity” then don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
Players who will become successful nhlers will battle through that and leave the GM and Coach no choice but to play them.

On paper this team sure looks more talented but it also looks mentally tougher. Trading Hamilton and bringing in a guy like Neal is likely exactly what the room needed. There were too many guys who seemed (from the outside) like they were okay with losing. Gio, Smith, Chucky, Neal are all warriors that drag their teams into the fight. That will be really good for the younger players on the team. They may or may not win more games but this team is going to be much tougher to play against.

People in this thread has said Neal is a borderline dirty player. Whats the context with this assertion. I had the impression Neal was a marleau type player. Just a lunch bucket type of guy.

Lots of questionable hits (and a handful of suspensions) years back. Has been quite a lot better in the last 3-4 years.

Definitely. There are a lot of NHL contracts on this team right now amongst the forwards. Those guys are hard to move at training camp time time if they get beaten out of a job. Wonder if someone like Lazar gets moved before then.

I don't think it's likely possible to sign a high end UFA and not be worried about the term.
That's the nature of the game.
If you don't ever want to be worried about the term when you sign players to long term contracts, you'll likely never have to be worried about being stressed out planning a Stanley Cup parade either.
LOL some of those clips in the first video are questionable at best.
The older ones when he was younger seem to be a bit borderline, I like that he plays with an edge so long as he can tow the line.
I really don't like the knee to the head or the late hit on Couturier in the playoffs, but the rest of those don't seem bad at all. That hit on Seguin is exactly what we need more of.

Was going to post the same thing. Those two were really bad, the rest were either borderline or plays that I actually liked.
We need a guy like this.

Wait, are people actually arguing that James Neal is not a dirty player?
... Wow, it didn't take long for this place to become HFBoards - Vancouver Canucks circa 2011, did it.

Foo should have the attitude that he is top of the depth chart, and he is going to come into camp and prove it. No roster spots are set in stone. They will go to the most competitive players.
