I misread the title & thought it said Broke: instead of Brooks:

Then I realized that made more sense.

27-33 is probably the prime age for a defensemen.

So by trading Karlson you get is 28 year old year for low cap hit, his 29-33 years for 11 million where he is market value then 3 years where he is overpaid.

If your primary window is 6 years long then rebuild he is a great add especially if you can do it with futures. Unsigned at the deadline he is getting a 1st and an tier 1 prospect.

If he is signed I think it takes a legitimate established roster player like a Tkachuk to get him without a package. Or the package looks similar but larger than what Hamilton got. A established 3/4 defensemen with upside, An established 2nd line forward, A future tier 1 prospect plus a high draft pick.

Essentially Hamilton plus a 1st for Karlson.

It would be the new team that does the work in securing his signature. Not something Ottawa is providing, and thus not something to compensate them for.

What Ottawa is providing is the ability to get that cost certainty before completing the trade. And that, very much, does up the value of Karlsson in a deal.

Ottawa is providing its permission for teams to talk to him, without which they could do it.

If you make the trade prior to signing him, you (1) can only sign him for 7 years, and (2) don't know if he'll sign with you at all.

Ottawa is allowing teams to get the security of knowing that you'll get a signed Karlsson, by allowing them the opportunity of talking contract with him ahead of time. That's a big difference.

The level he was playing at during their playoff run? Not far off, I would only put McDavid and Crosby ahead of that.

Last year because of the injury there were probably 30 better players, and by all accounts the ankle is still not 100 percent.

Exactly, to anoint him as the 2nd best player on earth is crazy IMO

That is prime for a defenseman (meaning defense)

But prime for offense is 23 - 27. And Karlsson isn't a defenseman, he is an offensive star that plays from the point.

I think the absolute best that you could hope for, if acquiring him, would be for him to remain elite offensively for 3 years. And the cost for that is far, far too much. Not to mention that, once the offensive skills start to wane, you essentially have Green at $11M per.

Seem to be forgetting Ovi.

Karlsson is far from being the 2nd best player in the NHL. He's in the top 10 but not top 3.

News Update

Chris Stevenson @CJ_Stevenson
NHL source tells The Athletic he thinks Dallas has emerged as front runner for Karlsson and Bobby Ryan will not be part of the deal. No other details.

Any stabs at what the Stars are offering? Without taking Ryan back the return must be huge.

Gotta think Klingberg is part of the package going to Ottawa. Otherwise a Karlsson-Klingberg one-two punch would be pretty deadly.

Offensively...

Still a team where the only game plan to beat them is: get the puck on net.

Honka is probably one of the players.

I'd guess something along 2019 1st, 2020 2nd, Janmark, Devin Shore, and Honka. Maybe Roope Hintz there instead of one of the other pieces.

Don't see Dallas trading Klingberg or Heiskanen. Unless it's a smaller package like Heiskanen and 2019 1st.

Honka's probably in there. I wouldn't be totally shocked if Heiskanen was instead, though... that'd go a long way to getting it done.
