5-11 170 Ryan to go along with 5-9 160 Czarnik and 5-9 157 Gaudreau and 5-10 185 Mangiapane.

1) There must be a rule change in the works. No Hitting to the head, or upper body or lower body.

2) The Flames are going to play jail break hockey ... like Hartley but only faster.

3) there is a new trophy... the Team Lady Byng.

PS when Trevling goes into the locker room he wants the players to be physically afraid.

I seem to recall that there was a spell of time where Gaudreau and Monahan were the only ones scoring. A bottom 6 player who can score is exactly who we need right now.

Ricardodw seems particularly bitter about the loss of Stastny!

If Derek Ryan does not score 38 points next year, that will be a good thing because it means that one or both of Bennett or Jankowski have taken the next step.

Ryan is an insurance policy, and contingency. If our young guys don't develop we think they will, we will need a guy who can play up the lineup. At $3 million per year, the salary is not unmovable not a big risk nor is the term.

Derek Ryan will not hold back Bennett or Jankwoski, at that cap hit and term, the flames will not be forced to play Ryan over anyone. If they had signed JVR or Neal or Perron to the bigger terms and cap hits, then they would have been forced to play them over the young kids.

I see this as signing as the Flames having faith in Jankowski and Bennett and anticipating them becoming the top six threats we expect. Ryan is a signing to insulate their growth. He very well could play with them and help them start off with possession more frequently as opposed to spending most of the shift defending.
I agree this is about fine for the younger players, but think it’s more compliment than insurance.

Bennett and Jankowski aren’t going to take a step playing with Brouwer or lazar or Foo. Now they will likely have one of Ryan, Frolik, or maybe Lindholm on occasion. They’ll take draws in the strong side more often so can be less sheltered, and have a guy who can keep up and score.

With the cap where it is there is no way the Flames will ever be close to the ceiling. It's a year long and half a million more than it would be ideally. But it's still very manageable.

As for the Bob Stauffer connection. He was around the U of A all the time sniffing Katz's farts before he was Oilers owner. He would still be pretty connected to U of A players.

This.

Ryan doesn't have to play center, and looking at that skill chart, it may not necessarily be his strongest position. Maybe he ends up on the right with Backlund and Frolik.

Ryan is on TSN now.

Says Peters was a factor in his decision, but it was more about being closer to home and his fit in the lineup.

Whoops, dropped out mid-call.

Before calll went dead he said he is expected to play up and down in lineup. Thinks it will be a middle center spot. I presume its 3rd line center with spot duty on 2nd. Janko as 4th line center?

I’m all for using July 1 to find and pay guys for rare skill sets. Righty. Wins face offs. If that stuff makes a difference in 2 or 3 games in a season, then it could be difference from making playoffs or not. It’s better than just hiring generic 30-40 point guys. I would pay a little more to have that uniqueness.

Ryan went from 1.425m 1 year to 3.125m per 3 years 9.375m Trelivng definitely didn't sign him for a discount.
The 31 year old owes Bill Peter's a years supply of Steak and Lobster.
Surre hope he is worth triple his pay raise.

Triple would be 4.3
It’s a lot closer to double.

That's barely a 2x pay raise.

Math is hard.

This is a good signing. I think he'll fit in good on the Bennett line. I hope to see a Frolik-Bennett-Ryan third line as you'd have two grinders (Frolik/Bennett), two skilled playmakers (Bennett/Ryan), and a good overall speed mix.
