How about the NLL to make it big like his Uncle John? Sort of like Jordan leaving the Bulls to try out to for the White Sox because of his dad.

I'd do it (or even go higher), but only if Hanifin and Lindholm are locked in first to long term deals. If you get them at a good price, then you have all the key players locked in for at least 4 years. Then you lock in Tavares at a price that explodes the salary structure for your competitors. It will also make other teams stars want to hit free agency rather than resign with them, causing more chaos for the other teams, while the Flames would be in good shape for at least 4 years. Win-win.

Kypreos suggesting the delay might be an attempted sign and trade so Tavares can get an 8th year from his new team.

Didn't you find out they have to be with their teams at the trade deadline for the 8th year?

Yes which is why he would have to sign with the Islanders first and then get traded.
Kypreos doesn't understand that though, his tweet says Tavares' rights might be traded, but I think he means sign and trade.

Could the Islanders sign him then reneg on trading him. If he refuses to play, suspend him without pay.

If they never want to sign a free agent again, yes, yes they could.

I'd just say that the team isn't giving me proper value. It would never happen but it would be a nice additional chapter to this soap opera. This should have been done all behind the scenes and not ala LeBron.

Friedman on the Fan hinted yesterday at a one year max dollar contract followed immediately by an 8 year contract starting next year. Are there any rules in place for a team signing both contracts on the same day?

Yes, if a player signs a 1 year deal that player can't sign a new contract until Jan 1 of that season.
It is risky for the player because if they get hurt or their production drops down before Jan 1, the team can reneg on the following contract.

In reality other teams than the Isles can go more than 8 years as Friedman speculated yesterday.
His example was sign Tavares to a 1 year max contract at 15 million, then because he would be property of that team, they could then extend him after Jan. 1 to an 8 year deal. Giving them 9 years in total.
The only team i see willing to go that route would be the Leafs....if it happens at all.

That would probably be called out for circumventing the rules of the CBA.
But you can circumvent the circumvention by signing a contract post dated to January 1 and file and announce the extension then or just make a vetbal agreement to put pen to paper during the season.
Edit: I'm slow

actually umm not, may mean you cant sign some players down the road but then you cash them for other assets , great asset mgmt. this is purely cash spend, today costs you nothing but cash. Rare this calibre player is available for cash period

Don't do it Lou, that extra year is all you have over other teams.
If he wants to walk #### him, he can take the lesser term and money.
I'm going to be pissed if he chooses San Jose, but I will be even more pissed if they get him at a lower cap hit because Lou caved and did a sign and trade so the team could spread the money out over an extra year.

They would have to wait until after the trade deadline to do that. The CBA specifies that players can only sign an 8-year extension if they've been with their team since the most recent trade deadline. A 7-year (or shorter) extension could be signed after January 1.
