IMO, Washington won the series because they had the more talented and deeper forward group and Vegas had no shutdown pair to answer the likes of Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, Backstrom, Oshie and etc who ate them right up.

You mean Winnipeg? Cause they did that with a pretty big hand from Reaves.

Do not want. Face-punching will soon be gone from the league entirely. We're going to pay a guy to fight the 5 or 6 guys left in the league who still punch faces?
The Penguins thought they needed this guy, then realized he was a waste of a roster spot and moved him.
This team needs to get faster and more skilled, not pretend it's still 2004.

The team can get faster and more skilled at the same time. It's possible to do both.

I think Reaves has done a good job of adapting his game from a facepuncher to a serviceable 4th liner whose hard on the forecheck. He’s been a regular feature of well regarded hard to play against lines.
Watching a lot of Vegas in the playoffs, he was a positive factor almost every time he was on the ice and helped to suffocate some of the leagues best.
I’m for his signing, especially if it gives us and excuse to jettison Brouwer.

You mean the guy who played 7 minutes a game in that series? Your not going to convince me that Reaves played a big part in the Knight's success last season. He played in half the team's playoff games and played the least amount of minutes when he was in the line up.
The Knights were crushing teams in the playoffs and all season long before they even acquired him at the trade deadline. The Flames don't need more bruisers who sit in the box for half the game, they need goal scorers.

The Penguins moved him in a (somewhat) hockey trade to bring in a solid player in Brassard. It’s not like they placed him on waivers. The team he went to was even higher in the standings.
He then played well enough for Vegas that they won 3 playoff series. He didn’t punch a single face the whole time he was there. He was especially effective against Winnipeg.

My only problem with this is that I don’t see how the Flames sign Reeves unless they massively overpay.

I like the acquisition, but fear his over-use.
If used properly, (as St. Louis and Vegas did) he's a very effective asset to our roster. However, this team has over-used players like him quite liberally in situations that don't play to their strength.
As a 13th forward that can move in and out of the lineup, and inserted where needed depending on the play of the game this is a very effective weapon. Used well, he's a feared commodity in the NHL.

I know when I think of championship rosters they're littered with guys who are best described as "serviceable"...
We should demand better then "serviceable".

Ryan, Reeves...
Nope, still waiting on a name that actually address our biggest need: TOP 6 WINGERS - In case spectacled hipster treliving has forgotten what that is while free agency shopping out where nobody else does.
These buys are further down the priority list.

This is where the Flames will miss Ferland. A Ryan Reaves type player who can score and play top 6 minutes.
I get why they traded him being 1 year away from getting paid but next season it'll be a tough hole to fill.

Nothing we learned about Reaves today has indicated that a top-6 winger isn't a higher priority.

Talk about comparing apples to oranges. Not saying anything bad about Ferland but he is nothing like Reaves. Reaves plays hard every shift he gets and is probably the most feared fighter in the league.

Our issue with the bottom 6 wasn't that they weren't tough enough. It was that they didn't score enough. I think going into November Versteeg had the only goals for the bottom 6 then got hurt. Brouwer, Stajan, Bennett, Hathaway, Lazar all played like junk last year.
Will Reaves fix that? No.

Ryan Reeves is almost like a Death Star out there. If someone messes with his team mate a planet gets punched out of orbit.

If he's just tough and cannot score then he's useless. We need more Ferland types that can contribute both ways. More apples, less oranges or something.
