I have always wondered if goalies shouldn't have their draft cut off age different than skaters (e.g. 22 or 23) with a free for all on professional development until then. Alternatively, perhaps the age for team rights such as waiver eligibility could also be considered during the next CBA. The flames have invested considerable time in both Rittich and Gilles, when in reality they would be still be really young for a goalie if they made it in the next 2-3 years to a full time gig in the big leagues. If they are both waiver eligible, then the backup carousel that the flames used as a development technique last year likely wouldn't work anymore which potentially hurts the development of the goalie that doesn't make it out of camp.
(I am assuming that at the "mass assignment" of players to the AHL at the end of training camp our goalie (s) would have a lower chance of getting picked up than mid season when there may be injuries).

This is a very meagre UFA class, My guess is that guys are going to get well paid for a long time. I hope that the Flames don't lock up any player past the age of 32.

Then they will not be able to sign anyone of any sort of significance.
I think they go after Grabner...probably take 3M X 3years to get him....maybe a bit more?

Goalies are waiver exempt for one more year than skaters. Gillies is exempt this year, Rittich is not.
Also, the waiver costs to claim a goalie with limited experience are significantly higher than the costs to claim a skater.

If I'm Yak, I call Chayka with that offer. Try to find that magic with Galchenyuk and revive his career.

1 year and 1 million is worth the risk IMO.
What is the downside of bringing him in on that deal?
Worst case you can send him to Kladno with Jagr.

I'm hoping the Flames can land Bozak. Decent enough skater, wins a ton of faceoffs, and I don't think the price would be too high. He'd be good on the PP among other situations. Mostly a second liner FWIW, but if he's not above $5M for 2 years, I'd take him.

A roster spot. And the fact that he would be pulling a line down with his if he weren't working out (which seems fairly plausible at this point)

Riley Sheahan not offered qualifying offer surprises me, though maybe Pens trying to get him for cheaper...
32 pts in 73 GP (~36 pts over 82 G), < 15 min/gm
Not sure where he'd fit with Flames, but former Wings 1st rnder shouldn't be long without employment.

Duclair is a guy that I can't see the Flames going after. The rumored character issues is something that the Flames just cleared-up, and I can't see them taking the chance on bringing in someone into the dressing room.
Yakupov would be 'fine' as I am sure he would come cheap, but at this time the expectations have to be very low with him. He might just be a wrecked prospect at this point. I don't necessarily mind him because one thing has been a constant with him - he works hard. IQ, on the other hand... I wouldn't hate it, but I wouldn't love it either. I just don't see where he would fit in.
Grabner is really interesting to me.

Yakcity will maybe get one last kick at the can. Might even have to accept a PTO or head back to Russia. He'd do well on the big ice.

I'd love to see Yak here on a 1x1. All he needs to be is a trigger man for Janko or Johnny.

Its some cba rule where because of the year he started in the league if they went to arbitration the Canucks would have been forced to accept the contract up to 4m or something, wouldnt have chance to walk away
There was an article on the athletic that detailed it but its pay walled so i wont c/p
They say they are working on resigning him but wouldnt surprise me if he walked, they have lots of bodies on the left side going forward

Bill Peters on the Fan 960 just said "hopefully we have a leg up there" in regards to signing Derek Ryan.

I would say that:
Monahan
Backlund
Bennett
Lindholm
Dube
Jankowski
Lazar
(Shore/Ryan)
Would be, by far the deepest center group Nail Yakupov has ever played with.
He has had success with skilled offensive playmaking centers (Gagner as a rookie, Derek Roy a few years later, McDavid, Duchene).
However Gagner was traded shortly after his rookie year, Roy was a bizarre rental, his stint with rookie McDavid only lasted about 8 games when he got injured, and Duchene too was traded. Dallas Eakins was also a toxic element.
I am not saying Yak doesn't have on-ice flaws but he is by all accounts a very high character guy and there is no denying his combonation of speed and shooting has yet to be honed due to the fact that he isn't good enough to stick in a top 6 and has never played on a team with centers that can set him up. I do believe he would work with our center group. He probably wouldn't get the PP time here that he wants for his individual success but there is nothing stopping him from adding skill, tenacity, and speed to the bottom of a lineup starved for it. And should we need him, his dangerous and quick shot release is still an asset to a power play.
Further, along with a deep center group we have a strong defense core that can dictate the tempo. On paper we could be the first team to PROPERLY insulate him in his career. Even St. Louis had some pretty bad center depth when he was there.
