I mean its done now and I hope Lindholm is a great Flame but I think Ferland is getting undersold around here now.

Honestly I think that Ferland is getting a bit over rated here. And no I don't buy that Ferland brings more to the game. He has an impact when he want's to physically dominate the game, but the last time we really saw that consistantly was two years ago. Since then he's been ok physically, but I wouldn't class him as anything more then a once every 5 or 10 game streaky player. But he's at his ceiling, I don't believe that Lindholm is even close to his ceiling yet. I also believe in the day and age of needing skill and playmaking in your top 6, Lindholm is just plain more suited to it.

I'm not saying this is a great trade, but its not as dramatically bad as some people are laying it out as being.

Like Ferly and all, but as Darren Haynes noted:

@DarrenWHaynes

"As for Ferland being in that trade, one year away from UFA would have been a factor. I love his story and how he turned his life around during his time with the club, but inconsistent play was always a talking point. e.g. 19 g in his first 42 games last year, 2 g in the last 35."

I think this is highly debatable. Elias Lindholm is a FAR more versatile forward than Ferland who creates a whole panoply of options in the top six. The benefit of this deal is not realized by just swapping one player out for the other, it is rather in how the switch changes the complexion of the entire group. It also sets the Flames up nicely by adding to their set of 20-23-year-old forwards.

When we were discussing this as a potential deal a few days ago I pointed out that they have to have an internal call on Hamilton that will decide it. I said that the Luobardias comments pretty much put me in the "this guy is getting traded" camp so it doesn't come as a shock. There was just so much damn smoke ... the brother ... uppity from the Bruins, then Luobo and his compete question.

To me deals are never going to happen until you feel uncomfortable about it.

When we discussed Lindhom and Hanafin for Hamilton it felt too good to me, so I doubted it would happen in that form. I expected a toss in. I do admit that the toss ins went beyond perfect and into uncomfortable so that suggests it's either fair, or maybe a tough of an overpay for the Flames.

Ferland with one more year left was either going to walk or get paid too much to be up and down. If Fox wasn't going to sign than his value is somewhat diminished.

So I guess my summary is an overpay to get what you want, which to me is not a bad thing to see from your GM.

Hanafin and Lindholm to me are now part of the Flames core, and Ferland wasn't. So that's one out two in for key players at a key age to build around.

So this isn't a "wow we hozed those guys!" day, but I think it's going to be an important trade in this team's current history.
You can put lipstick on a pig, but its still a pig. Treliving got hosed, he chases his players and he gets caught up in the talks and ends up overpaying. And it's not a good thing when you GM is overpaying, other GMs are going to start taking advantage of this. Even if Fox wasn't going to sign, you don't just throw him in a trade.

Ferland was first on the team in hits with 171 in 77 games. Hathaway had 154, Bennett in 3rd with 140. Ferlands total icetime ranked 12th on the team and his TOI per game was ranked 14th.

His 171 hits ranked him 36th in the entire NHL. Only one player ahead of him with more hits, Dustin Brown, had more goals.

14 of those with more hits were defensemen, so he ranked 22nd in hits among forwards.

Pairing it down again to right wingers, only 7 RWers in the NHL had more hits.

The stats don't lie here.

Kipper was in a VERY different league as a Flames player. One of the few truly elite. "We" may not have liked his refusal to attend, but the Flames management never seemed to have a big problem with it at all.

Lindholm, I'm unsure on, he's probably a Monahan light, but a bit better of a playmaker.

Fox, I think probably didn't like what was in front of him and indicated that he might not sign here.

Here's the bottom line though

Hamilton - Core player
Ferland - Accessory player
Fox - Maybe an unwilling prospect

Lindhom - Core
Hanifan - Core.

I don't think this trade is as bad or needs as much dramatic, back of the hands forehead histrionics as are being presented.

At the end of the day also, I believe that this trade is about culture. This team gets two young core players for a good prospect a very good core top pairing dman and a maddenly inconsistent Ferland.

On the contract front, this gives Calgary two more RFA's to deal with. They're sitting at about 55 million in cap space, I would expect that Lindholm will probably be looking at 5.5 and Hanifan probably the same, which would put Calgary at $65 million with their main RFA being Janks, Shore and Hathaway (Bleah)

The Flames also became faster up front and added something they needed which is offensive depth.
The bolded sums it up for me. The more I digest this, the more I like it. We traded one core piece (with flaws), one supplementary piece, and a prospect, for two core pieces.

The roster got younger, probably faster, more talented, and better defensively.

If Fox is the price for that, I am happy to pay it.

Biggest concern, outside of the inclusion of Fox as throw in, is the Flames could not score, and gave up another 12 goals in this deal.
Out of Thanks, so Thanks

You're thinking of Hampus. Elias Lindholm earned 2.7m last year. Doesn't take away from the inconsistency, but facts, right?

I hate that I have to come on and diminish Ferland because he is one of my favourites but he's not even on the same tier of player as Lindholm. Lindholm plays every part of the game, he plays the PK, he plays the PP, he plays RW, he plays centre.

Lindholm is a top 5 pick in a deep draft and projects as top six centre. Everyone is all caught up in the "40 points", never mind that Ferland had one season left of control while Lindholm likely has at least another 5.

Again, what's with this "he just threw him in" stuff. A trade is only completed when both sides agree to all assets involved. So if it took Adam Fox then it took Adam Fox. He was not thrown in.
