The obsession over the 2013 draft is alarming at this point.

Still not buying your assertion Peters somehow held him back in any way.

Hanifin @ 21yo = 10g - 22a - 32pts - 21PIM
Hamilton @ 21yo = 7g - 18a - 25pts - 42 PIM

I don't really care what Hamilton did at age 21. Today, right now, Hamilton is the better defenceman and Calgary isn't in a position where they should be trading good players for potential.

Hamilton has produced well on top pairings with partners that are studs, Gio and Chara. That is the only situation that he can be evaluated in, with an elite partner.

One saving feature is also that Peters surely played a part in guiding this move. Having thorough inside knowledge of all players involved at least makes me comfortable that due diligence was done, and then some.

The problem in the deal isn't the Hamiton/Hanifin swap...it's that the Flames still added on top of that.

Hamilton + Ferland or Fox for Hanifin + Lindholm would probably have been a somewhat fair trade but including both Ferland and Fox was too much.

Even if Fox wasn't going to sign here he should have been included in a separate trade to get a different asset back...kind of feels like too much of a throw in here.

Why? It’s a solid move to maximize assets & shake up a team that obviously underperformed.

Based on the fire Treliving thread & overreactions like this, it seems like several people are turning into Oileresque fans with delusional returns for our overvalued assets? Take off the rose colored glasses & realize the Flames were a mentally weak team last year that Treliving knew Gulatzan couldn’t fix.

What is so bad about this move?

I think it’s a perfect move. We didn’t scalp anyone, because once you do, no one will make deals with you anymore.

Trading Brodie or Bennett now are selling low.

You have to give to get.

I don't think Ferland was going to be re-signed at the end of the season so at worst we lose him for nothing or at best we get a 2nd at the deadline.

If Fox indicated he was high risk to not resign then moving him makes sense the question is what was his value? That signing risk goes to whoever picks him up as well which limits value to again around a 2nd round pick. If we could have signed him then he's worst a 1st plus.

So Hannifan and Lindholm for Hamilton is a good deal if we couldn't get value for Fox and Ferland

Hannifan and Lindhold for Hamilton, a 1st and 2 2nds seems steep.

Also can we sign Lindholm at a reasonable price if Carolina couldn't.

Sounds like he may have been a bit of a loner and the team didn't think he was always giving his best? Really hard to say but Hanafin isn't chopped liver so it's not like the team is going from say Taylor Hall to Adam Larsson talent disparity.

Don’t like losing Fox, but maybe he wasn’t going to sign.

Ferland might be one more concussion away from retirement. I worried about his health and hope he avoids that.

I think Dougie was about to explode with more PP focus this year.

I love that the GM is not afraid to make significant changes. Too much we've seen other franchises (see up north) stand pat and "let it fix itself".
If there's a problem, address it.

We have had a couple of mediocre - awful seasons with Hamilton and Ferland at the head of the core. I'm glad our GM is looking to move pieces around in order to better our team, as opposed to staying par for the course.

One thing we know for certain, Brad Treliving has tied his future to that of the Carolina Hurricanes. His hiring of Bill Peters and this trade certainly puts his future with the Calgary Flames on the line. The team steps up next year and makes some noise, or Treliving will be shown the door. Treliving has pushed the last of his stack all in on this hand. His last move of note will be on July 1st, when he can spend what ever cap space we have available.

On the trade itself, I don’t like it. Gave up too much for too little in return. I don’t care about Ferland’s status a full season away, he was a guy that filled an important position on the hockey club. In the search for more goals, we gave up more than we got in return. The only way Treliving can save this is if he gets both players on good long term contracts, and then grabs a goal scorer on July 1st. If he doesn’t find that extra player in free agency, we are in the exact same position we were last season. All that he accomplished so far was a shuffle of deck chairs.

I’ll wait to pass ultimate judgment on this deal in 10 days, after the free agent dust has settled. That will determine whether Treliving can maintain any trust with the fans, or if he’s become a lame duck.
