I would be shocked if they signed four year deals (or less). This is where players at this status and age range cash in and are looking for long term security. If they would take a short deal, some of them would be good options, but I find that extremely unlikely.

That's exactly the kind of scary I'm talking about. I'd want no part of that.

I get where you're coming from about signing a UFA vs. giving up assets, but I strongly disagree about the names you've listed thinking they'll take short deals.

Tavares. It's time for the Flames to catch a break. Tavares.
Tavares.
Maybe if we all think it, believe it and say it, it'll happen.
Tavares.

Tre doesn't want to get into a bidding war on July 1st and will likely pass.

Okay, "some" may have been pushing it. But I wouldn't be surprised if one of them did go for it. Hudler was 28 years old, coming off a 50 point season, and signed a 4 year deal with the Flames. Frolik (27) and Brouwer (31) also signed 4 year deals. Last year Shattenkirk (28) signed a 4 year deal.

Sure, Perron, JVR, Neal and Bozak may have more demand than Hudler, Frolik, or Brouwer did. They're also a bit older. But Neal hasn't had more than had 45 points since the 15-16 season. He might not get as much term as people expect. Bozak may not get more than 4 years either. For some reason I don't see him getting a king's ransom.

I voted 'other' because there is no Kapanen option from Toronto. I think we see a deal that brings a burner to the team and Kapanen has great wheels. I'm not sure where his offensive ceiling is but he is a well rounded player. I think Treliving is telling the truth when he says that adding speed is a priority this off season.

I'm going with Mark Stone. Brother plays with Calgary and Ferland was his linemate in Junior.

Yeah I didn't put guys like that as options because they aren't proven top 6 NHL forwards yet, but yeah he could be a good option.

Speaking of burners, I wonder if Ottawa would ever entertain flipping Duchene? I'd be interested in that if Treliving could swing it with an extension.

I find it a bit mind boggling that currently 18 people legitimately believe the Flames will sign John Tavares. Kudos for the optimism though.

I find it just as surprising, if not more, that 33 people so far think we won't acquire any top 6 forwards this off season.

Actually leads all the poll options by a fair margin. Although I realize it's only 1/4 of the total votes.

It's been too many post seasons (Dougie being the notable exception) that the Flames have gone big game hunting (or supposedly did), and came away with an also ran. I have no expectations or hopes. I'm in a wait and see groove right now.

I chose none of the above.

I don't know if there will be a fit anywhere in terms of price of acquisition and desire to come here/bring them in.

The Flames desperately need 2 top 6 forwards.

If Backlund and Frolik are in your top 6, you're not a playoff team. They are elite 3rd line players, but if you don't have the depth to have them in their proper roles, your team is not very good.

The Flames could always use a center and a RW. It is possible to shift Janko over to the wing if a C is acquired.

Anything less than this

Gaudreau-Monahan-New guy
Tkachuk-New guy/Janko-New guy
Bennett-Backlund-Frolik
Miscellaneous guys that earn the 4th line spots.

probably means the team misses again. Ferland should not be counted on as a top 6 forward. He is basically this team's version of Glencross. A guy who can pot 20, but is still a 3rd/4th line forward.

Tre might've realized that we don't need more middle. We need more high-end. Why get it through a trade with a high acquisition cost if you can get it from a UFA with no acquisition cost?

Adjust for the typical percentage that didn’t read the OP or the question completely before voting.

Tavares may be AstroTurf, but AstroTurf looks better than real grass 90% of the time. I’LL VOTE ASTROTURF.

I've half convinced myself that Brandon Saad won't cost as much as some would think to get. I feel the Blackhawks need a D man. Any D man. and they need to cut some cap. IMO, Stone for Saad is in the ballaprk of what I figure they'd do. Probably off base but closer to the mark than further away.

I think Lindholm can be had as well. RFA and the Canes are going to be weird for a couple of years with their owner running the ship. He might be a little costlier than I think he is worth but I think the Flames could get him.

But why get him? 23 year old RFA who puts up 40 points a year?
Well he is right handed, is a natural center and if we're talking about adding one RW and one C....Why not Lindholm? He can slot in anywhere from the 1-3 RW, the 2-3 C. Just multi tooled assset to have when the argument is GOOD solid forward depth. Just feel he may be a good target to move something for.

You're just sweating because if one of them is a wizard and makes it happen, you're gonna have a Treliving buddy jesus tapestry zapped into your back.

I don't understand why so many people think the Flames will land Tavares. If the Islanders don't feel they will sign him, they will trade him before the deadline so a team has exclusive rights to try and sign him. And some team will give a 1st round pick. The Flames of course do not have a 1st and the Isles won't let Tavares walk without getting anything for him. I wish I was more positive, but I just don't see it happening.

No team is going to give up a first unless they are confident they can sign him. With the courting period now, the only advantage to trading for his rights is getting to talk to him and sign him before that.
But if he is intent on testing the waters, you've just thrown away a 1st for nothing.

I don't think most people are predicting the Flames sign him - just hoping for it. It's a fun "what if" to think about.

Dear Mr. Brad Treliving,

Please don't sign anyone on July 1st. I don't want to see any huge overpays. Ask someone to take away all your methods of communication if necessary.
