Pretty simple.

As stated, apples and oranges.

There are narratives around reasons all 3 could be moved, no?

Whether it be from a depth perspective, a need perspective, or a market valuation that makes the return attractive, these seem like movable assets given appropriate returns.

For sure. But one has considerably more value than the others.

That was the discussion.

Was it? I don't think that's all you were trying to say.

Deluxe has it right. Didn't seem like you wanted to answer to your drive by earlier 'one of these is not is not like the other'. .

The Flames could get more for Hamilton? really? ...you think??

Apologies for the unquoted vague post!

In the context of the thread and the conversation at the time, Dougie commands a return well beyond that of the other two (Bennett and Fox). I was agreeing with Timbit.

Regardless, Hamilton is the only one of the three that could possibly return something of value which would likely have a significant impact on the team moving forward. Trading Bennett and/or Fox likely won't fix our offensive inefficiency in 18/19. I'mm not saying trading Dougie is the right call, but damn I bet a team two would pay a premium for the dude, salty guy.

IF Friedman is accurate in the Flames listening to offers on Hamilton, what would you guys consider a good return for him?

IMO he's not worth trading because I feel like he has a lot more to offer, coach Peters impending.

Then I'm glad you aren't our GM because that's nonsense. Reinhart cost the oilers the same but they'd probably bite your hand off if you offer them a second rounder. Value changes. Christ, Kris Russell almost got us a first round pick.

The hall trade in isolation is a bad comparable but Dougie's value has gone up significantly since the trade because Cassidy's hands were tied by the threat of an offer sheet, so we got him relatively cheap. If you put it out there that all you wanted was a mid first and two seconds, 30 GMs would be reaching for the phones to call.

Peters said when he got hired he doesn't like players that take undisciplined penalties. Hamilton and Bennett fit that role.

I don't think he was saying he'd trade such players. I think he was saying he'd coach not to do that.

Dougie's "undisciplined" penalties are way overstated IMO. He took a few that were maybe best described as being because he hadn't gotten his feet moving and relied on his reach. That's not undisciplined, it's maybe lazy. He got some because he was beaten. That's what happens to defencemen sometimes. And he has more than a couple that were because he made a good defensive play that garnered a really weak or nonexistent penalty call.

What I think of a song undisciplined is an offensive zone penalty for hooking or slashing, retaliatory penalties, or just dumb aggressive penalties.

I would rather not see Dougie traded. However if we were going to trade him I'd expect a young top centre (drai, kuznetsov, trochek, etc) or a elite winger (Rantanen, Tarasenko, Stone, etc). Now players like that don't have a very high chance of being traded. So realistically we would probably be looking at a less developed player who still should become a first line player a 1st and 2nd.

Hamilton’s value is around Seth Jones’ value. However, I think Seth Jones for Ryan Johansen is not a deal the Flames want to make. Nashville had a position of extreme strength when it traded Seth Jones. Conversely, Calgary cannot afford the damage to its defence that losing Dougie Hamilton would cause.

I understand you could argue losing Hamilton wouldn’t cause the damage it theoretically should because Hamilton has been so under utilized (especially on the PP), but the reality is that the coaching change could mean Hamilton being fully utilized and the potential loss is just too great. I think Hamilton has 60-70 point potential with a full year on PP1 with Tkachuk, Monahan and Gaudreau.

If we trade out Hamilton, and in less than 5 years when Giordano is gone, we aren't left with much leadership, skill, or maturity on the back end.

I think the Flames defense is a position of strength when it comes to trade value. However I do not think trading Dougie Hamilton will improve our team, even if that is to improve/complete our 1st line/forward core. Why not see how Hamilton plays under the new coach and system first?

Kinda one step forward, two steps back if you ask me.

He also called Hamilton an elite defenceman.

The more I think on it the more I think we need to keep both Hamilton and Bennett and see how they do under new staff

New staff + speedier, more potent bottom six. Axe the Hathaways and Brouwers for a Grabner type.
