I get what you’re saying, and I agree in theory (I’ve been known to make a dumb joke about celebrity deaths on more than one occasion), but I dont think “I don’t check my discussions on the off chance that someone related to the situation hears it” is an accurate representation of where the line is.

I don't think we "shouldn't" joke about anything, everyone loves a good dead baby joke . And I think there's a difference between a tragedy where people die through no fault of their own, and someone who gets themselves stuck behind a wall.

But fair point, and I agree there is a line. That it is in Calgary is relevant. Time passed is relevant, impact is relevant (i.e. a tragedy like Toronto has much more chance of impacting people on the forum, and Canadians as a whole may feel attacked too so I'd be more sensitive as a result). There's a lot of factors, and no one's ever going to agree on how much each should weigh.

But I weigh the possible impact on the people I know I'm interacting with far greater than the possible impact on the people who I might have a small chance of unintentionally interacting with.

I was more taking issue with the community piling on for cheap "thanks" at the expense of the death of an actual Real Human Being. One or two digs is fine. The stud joke was funny. "A-wall"? A picture of wall-e? Come on. Either step up or don't bother.

Norm's joke about the Crocodile Hunter isn't even in the same ballpark as this scenario. 1) international news 2) he had it coming 3) Norm is Norm

It's pretty easy for me to imagine this guy as a random person I see in the +15 who died in a rather sad, lonely, and horrific manor and thus I find a string of bad jokes fishing for thanks like Dion reposting gifs in the funny picture thread pretty offputting. If some e-bro like pylon gets triggered by my sensitivity, I'm pretty cool with that tbh.

It's easy cause no one knows this person, or has any personal attachment.

Death is death, someone is hurting and deserves compassion. I don't see the Humbolt thread full of jokes. Where do you draw the line? Space shuttle jokes, 9/11 jokes?

That said, humour is a powerful healing tool, having a chuckle at darwinian circumstances is not the end of the world. A chuckle amonst family and friends is different than a bunch of strangers piling on for cheap laughs.

It's all relative to how people can relate to the event I think:

-Hockey bus crash - many of us have traveled by bus or are close to someone who traveled by bus to get to sporting events - hits closer to home

-Car hits a cat - many of us have pets, or know those who have pets and understand how important they are in our life. Also might know about a pet who died being hit by a car - hits closer to home

-Man dies in small space in wall - very few of us have any personally connection to something like this happening - does not hit close to home

It's much easier to make light of a situation when you can't relate to it actually happening to you or someone close to you.

Not to get too metaphorical but this is how people deal with life. We're all just one weird night away from falling into a bathroom wall. This is from a great Tim O'Brien book about war...The Things They Carried...

When someone died, it wasn’t quite dying, because in a curious way it seemed scripted, and because they had their lines mostly memorized, irony mixed with tragedy, and because they called it by other names, as if to encyst and destroy the reality of death itself.

I get where people are coming from being sensitive. But this is an internet forum, where people come from information and entertainment. And the circumstances here are fairly ridiculous, which is leading to the humour that's been displayed in this thread.

People are gonna be having a discussion on this on and off the internet, and some are gonna be making jokes about it. We shouldn't censor ourselves since it's a pointless initiative. Those family and friends who are affected by this tragedy, would be wise to avoid reading this thread, and other online comments about this to avoid coming across content that they wouldn't be fond of viewing.

It is sad that they've loss a loved one, but it's not everyday something like this happens. People are gonna talk about it, and see the humour in it as well.

Yeah, I think that's close to my feeling on dark humour. Death can be so absurd that sometimes the natural reaction to it is an absurd reaction.

But I also think it's normal and okay that some people find that type of humour (or just specific applications of it) offensive, because we deal with and think about death in different ways. As one of the pun-makers in this thread, I'd be sympathetic to someone who tells me that they think I crossed a certain line. It should be possible to have a discussion (as most of this thread has become) about what's appropriate and what's not, without people getting further offended by the fact that other people's lines are different than their own.

It was a room. A constructed void created at the time of last renovation. There was a mattress (bed) in there. Also a full sized piano and a guitar. The man was living in this void and gained access through a roof hatch.

There are horrible pictures floating around that I'm betting the security guards who work for Vic20 will be fired for distributing.

So no piano, bed or guitar?

I just found out that I know the father of the deceased.
The jokes and making light of this event made me laugh and I even considered adding to the levity. I certainly harbour no ill will to those who did as distance can easily give one a non chalance (sp)
After finding out that I know someone who is deeply devestatated by this tragedy. I certainly will not direct them to this site and I am not proud of my making light of this tragic but odd loss of life.
It is actually amazing how great ones circle of acquaintances reaches and in no way did I think there would be any connection however slight to my sphere of people I know.
A week ago a friend of mine died in an automobile accident, so you just never know when or how those you care for can be gone.
Just take some time to hug your loved ones and let the people in your life know how much you appreciate them.
