- Nobody has reported any posts in this thread. So the first I saw of the posts were this morning. Not sure if/when any other mods saw them. Sometimes I see a post and think it's a little off colour, but it's late at night, nobody else has reported them, and the tread seems to be somewhat self moderating.

Bottom line, I don't think those posts are appropriate. For here at least. However now we have to ask, do I spend the next 15 minutes going through posts and deleting them? What about the replies and/or the self moderation? Or do I spend the last 15 minutes of my lunch break going into a thread where somebody has asked for advice on a subject that I have some experience?
They should maybe be deleted at some point, but not for the sake of moderation. Instead, for the sake of the families/friends of the deceased, should they ever stumble in here.

Generally I think some people here need to remember that there are human beings at the other ends of these stories. If you’d be comfortable about people laughing at your dead relative, go for it, but think about it first before you say something you’d come to regret.

I think there's a huge difference between joking about a sad situation, and making jokes to someone actively experiencing the sad situation.

Personally I wouldn't check my discussions in a public place on the off chance that someone related to the situation might happen to be within earshot (or might happen to find the thread). I wouldn't expect someone to go to those lengths for me.

It's like telling yo mama jokes and someone nearby overhears and says "My mom is dead you insensitive clods!"

Also, I'm on the fence about how to spell dumass. The b looks weird. I know it's the correct spelling, I just don't like it.
Sorry, dumass looks wrong; dumbass looks right. Also, everytime I type dumass it autocorrects to Dumas so I had to be creative. Another also, you can't change the spelling of a word just because you don't like it.

Listen, pal. If you can completely misuse a word, I can re-spell a word.

Isn't that what Noah Webster did?

I don’t know, should we joke about the Humboldt kids? The victims of Toronto?

I get what you’re saying, and I agree in theory (I’ve been known to make a dumb joke about celebrity deaths on more than one occasion), but I dont think “I don’t check my discussions on the off chance that someone related to the situation hears it” is an accurate representation of where the line is.

He's not accurate at all, as he's disregarding the local aspect. Not to get too uppity, but this place has hundreds of local citizens that post and thousands that don't, and this is a local story no matter how funny people find it.

We literally had this with the Anderson station suicide thread. A bunch of stuff was said (including by me) and the guy's young son happened to find the thread later and started responding to people emotionally saying it wasn't suicide. Then later the mom came on and explained who we were all responding to. And that's just an example of someone actually finding the thread and signing up and responding, it doesn't even include the way more likely scenario of someone just finding it and reading.

Photon should know the reach of CP locally, it was a poor analogy and I think Ken002 had the right idea (although didn't follow through on it).

So what exactly is the obligation here? Because some people think that crawling around in ducts, falling into walls, and getting killed is a stupid thing to do, we're not allowed to discuss it or even joke about how stupid it is to die that way?

Sorry, but this is the internet. If you don't like what you're reading, read something else. You can't police sensitivity, and for that matter, you can't gauge it, either. Some people prefer nothing be said, and others prefer to talk about it. Some people actually joke about stuff when things get weird, believe it or not. Doesn't mean that those people woke up that day hoping someone would die in a wall, FFS.

I'll tell you what I would avoid if my dad died crawling through ducts and falling into walls. I would avoid threads labeled "Body Found in a wall of a bathroom". That's how you deal with the fact that even if you don't want to hear about it, other people talk about it. You can't shut up the world. All you can do is choose what you read.

These whole super sensitive, can’t handle reality triggered culture drives me nuts.

One of the closest people in my life commited suicide. People say stupid stuff like “Man I wanna blow my brains out.” Or “Might as well throw the rope over.”

You know what. I’m in no place to correct those people. It’s not their fault, nor their responsibility to know, nor care how I feel if someone makes a dumb joke that they in no way had malicious intent towards me by making it.

Be a frikking mature adult. And carry on with your day instead of slacktivisming your Facebook page with awareness memes, and going to a human rights tribunal because your feelings were hurt.

Secondly, if I die in a hilarious and pun-worthy manner. I trust in CP to give me the roasting I deserve for being an utter dumbass.

I agree completely. I meant to say “I don’t think...” as a general expectation that we shouldn’t have to check our selves just because someone close to a situation might read it is entirely false.

If anything, the internet would be a better place if people took that approach in all interactions. Act like you would if you knew anybody could be standing next to you, because that’s the Internet. If you’re comfortable making jokes about a deceased person with their family right beside you, go for it, but I wouldn’t be.

And also to quote the famously hilarious Fotze from 2010 in the wake of the Belarusian luge tragedy.

“You win some, you luge some.”

Probably the funniest one liner post in the history of this site.

It isn't a general joke about suicide. It would be days after the sucide occurred people making specific jokes about the person you were close to.

Lol, guess your friend was given a little TOO much rope! Amirite?
or
Guess he didn’t realise you point the gun AWAY from your face! Lol!

(Given the fact that I don’t know how he killed himself, I cannot accurately joke about it)

Point being here: there’s a difference between making a casual remark/joke that someone may relate to in a negative way, and actually mocking the death of a specific person.
