Now, if Burke had done a magnificent job, people overlook his appearance. The fact he didn't makes his appearance an issue.

When the person going for the job interview has a CV longer and more distinguished than 95% of people in the business, their appearance won't matter one bit. Anyone interviewing Burke likely shows up to the interview with their tie draped over their shoulder to win him over.

Less old-school mentality is good. The league is changing and the personnel should change with that. Truculence isn't at the top of the list anymore. Welcome to the day of speed and quick transition with skill.
Hopefully next up: King.

For everyone who didn't know what Burke did here since 2013...
Quote:
“The number one role here was to have input on the hockey side – every trade, coaching decisions… Tree and I would talk four to six times a day and meet for two hours in his office at a time,” said Burke of the early years. “Number two is the corporate support – speaking to business groups and season ticket holder groups.
“Three was community outreach, which is part of the Flames’ DNA. I’m proud of what we did with all three.”

I see that some are excited by this but doesn’t it really mean we’re being run by Arizona North now? I don’t see how this is cause for celebration.

No, it really doesn't. As I see it this news changes very little in how the organization is run.

Ok, with Burke leaving it stood to reason that Treliving and Maloney seemed to be running the show now. I mean unless KK is taking a bigger hockey side role again which would be even better.

I don't think Maloney is running anything. Last I heard he wasn't even located in Calgary and is still in Arizona- doing scouting and random things.
EDIT: Wow, I totally forgot he was named a VP. I am clueless, please carry on.

My only issue with this is that King will presumably hire the next GM if something goes south with Treliving. Not ideal given his track record on that front (or all fronts really).

Taking a while to get to 5000

Maloney & Treliving were the figureheads in Arizona but that was under different ownership with a different salary structure and different mandate.

I believe that Treliving is running the show, has been for a while now, and am not convinced that Maloney's role in the organization is all that significant. Hence, no real change in terms of operations with Burke's departure. So, I guess if you are going with the "Arizona North" narrative, you have to project that backwards to at least Maloney's hiring.

I bet the people who are throwing stones at KK never followed the Flames during the Ron Bremner days.

Maloney started as GM for the Coyotes in the 07/08 season. He took over a 70-80 point team and within 2 years they put up 107 points, followed by 99 and 97 point seasons, the last of which they went to the conference finals. So I don't think he's as terrible as he's made out to be.
Also, I haven't completely given up hope in Treliving yet either. This year was a ####ing disaster, no doubt...but we will see what happens in the next calendar year before I am ready to pull the plug on him as a fan.

I can't speak for everyone, but I was thrilled with Ken King's early tenure, and how instrumental he was in returning this franchise to a state of respectability. But I really soured on him in the past several years with how heavily involved he had become in hockey operations—especially in the Feaster era.

Burke had his hands on a lot of the charity work the team does for our community. You may not like his personality, but I think overall the good he did here well outweighs the bad.
Part of me is sad to see him go.

He's been a complete and utter failure in finding the right guys to build a winning organization.
The buck stops where?
Hitmen - 0 Memorial Cups
Flames - missed playoffs in 9 of 17 seasons since being hired as President in 2001. Just 1 Stanley Cup appearance.
