Calgary Flames hockey is like going to the dentist after a long time.
- Cautiously optimistic headed in
- Not much you can do when you take your seat
- Costs more than what you wanted to pay
- Hurts like hell during and after
- Left numb after the whole process
Go Flames Go!

Two seasons ago Tre hired a young coach to coach a young team when at least three high quality, experienced coaches were available. It's known that he didn't really interview one or more of these high quality candidates because Gully was his guy.
Against my better judgement, I gave the GM the benefit of the doubt. By the end of last season, there was signs that the system had some flaws. After going hot down the stretch, the flames stumbled and crumbled into the playoffs and lost four straight. It was a fragile team that had trouble generating offence down the stretch. It should have been a warning sign - and it was to me. I expected Gully would be on a short leash to start the season. He wasn't. I thought he'd be gone by new years so the season could be saved, he wasn't. In interviews Tre said he didn't fire Gully earlier because he honestly thought Gully was going to start turning dog #### into fillet mignon until it was too late and the season was basically over. I'm not sure how anyone watching the on ice product could have come to that conclusion.
Now, with the season over, Gully is finally gone. And Tre is hiring a coach that has more experience, but even less success - even though three high quality coaches are on the market. Based on the timing between Gully and the Peter rumours, its doubtful Tre did any type of in-depth research into the high quality coaches on the market.
Good coaches can do good things with mediocre teams that don't spend to the cap - to name a few: Tippet in Arizona, a few coaches in Ottawa (one of which was awfully mediocre), Trotz for seasons in Nashville, Hartley in Calgary, Babcock in Toronto, Galland in Florida, Jerrard in Colorado, and Maurice in Winnipeg.
Carolina hasn't even been close to being a good team under Peters. There is no evidence to suggest Peters is a top tier coach, let alone a good coach. Nothing. His regular season track record is garbage. There is no playoff track record of which to speak of, so there's no way to judge his ability to coach a seven game series.
Does any one honestly believe Peters could coach Calgary to a Stanley Cup? Im not sure how anyone can look at this hire and be even cautiously optimistic. It's an absolutely terrible decision. I would have actually been happier with another season of Gully because at least I could have held out hope he would be fired part way through the season.
I am starting to believe that this is a bucket shop of an organisation.

when the Flames played well, they looked pretty good imo... of course, when you are winning, everything looks better...
not a fan of GG, but the players definitely deserved a chunk of the blame too... though the poor PP astounded me...no offense to Cameron, because the PP was actually ok in year one...did Versteeg make that much of a difference?
haven't done a lot of research on Peters... like that he is from the Babcock school of thinking because i think he won't be so driven by advanced stats and, I hope, he shows a better feel for the game...
Fragility is a adjective used a lot to describe the Flames... and the facts bear that out... i believe that 22 times, they allowed 2 goals within 2 minutes... that is astounding to me...
Peters needs to fix that kind of mindset...

Hull, I think you might want to rebook at Trotz record in Nashville in his first four seasons (which is what Peters had in Carolina). I wouldn’t really compare Carolina to Toronto or Winnipeg either.

It is. The last 30 years provide ample evidence.
Just for reference here are the Five stages of Grief, most Flames fans are somewhere along stages 1-4 on this scale I’m imagining. Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance

Comparing Peters to Trotz doesn't really speak well for Peters. If 5 years of missing the playoffs followed by 4 years of first round knock outs is what we have to look forward to I'll be pissed.
Edit: I really hope Friedman is wrong about 3 years, a NHL loser like Peters has no business getting that type of term.

Fair enough but the notion was he was a good coach that did well with a low rent team. My point was that if Trotz is a good coach then Peters record isn’t any different.

A fair point to make and when you look at timelines they are similar so far. However Trotz has more recent success then Peters. The old what have you done for me lately.
I don't know why Trevliving has considered Peters. You can argue that Peters has done as good as he can with the players that he's got, but there are coaches out there that probably didn't get much and yet has surprisingly done way better. So, this means that this means that we can expect this team to not make the playoffs for the next three years and be acceptable. I think our expectations should be that if Peters is the coach, give Treliving and gang until December to see if the plug will be pulled to really frickin blow it all up. I think most of our patience is start to grow shorter every year with Treliving.

I think you may have misread his post and applied it to yourself.

I know there are people that aren't over the moon about this hire, but how do you come up with this conclusion? Treliving just fired a coach that missed the playoffs and fell short of expectations. There will be roster moves this summer. Missing the playoffs isn't acceptable for anyone.

If anyone wants to look on YouTube they have a lot of condensed 2017-2018 hurricanes games on there. I'm very disappointed in this hire and failing to see any benefit over the more qualified coaches, however from watching more than a few games I can see a few positives.
Peters doesn't do the D to D or forward drop pass as much as GG. He also had utilized Teravainen for one timers which is something I wanted to see more of from the flames.

I didn't think ownership would allow him to give a 3 year to a unproven coach again. If we miss next season go to think Tre is fired. Which means new GM would have to deal with 2 years of the previous regimes coach, unless we fire yet another coach haha.
