ROR would be nice however we still need a top RW.

Bennett isn't a huge trade chip, but enough of one to get a deal like that over the top. Brodie isn't enough to get ROR on his own. Even Brodie and Bennett won't get you ROR, so enter Fox.

Keep in mind part of my thinking is based on A) Fox likely not signing with the Flames and turning into a dead asset in about 11 months (which admittedly most don't share my pessimism) and B) wooing their GM early and hopefully closing a deal on a contract that Buffalo sees as an issue down the road.

ROR is a much bigger get than I think a lot of CP believe. I love Bennett, I wanted him to be something big, but to be honest at this point if his name was Paul Smith drafted in the 2nd round with everything else the same? Most of CP would throw him into a trade for a number one centre without hesitation.
Bennett can be something, absolutely, but we need to get past the idea of "former 4th overall pick" Bennett and see his value for what it is.

Doesn't ROR have a NMC? Why would he waive it for the Flames? He signed with the Sabres knowing full well what they were.

He was willing to sign here before, so it's possible he could waive to come here.
Yes it was a long time ago, and a different team, but who knows all the reasons he wanted to come.

Absolutely, but if ROR is available for a reasonable package you get him. I don't know the our cap situation off hand, but losing Brodie's 4.6m and Bennett's 1.9 means we're taking on 1mil extra from ROR's salary while needing to replace one defense spot.

That spot could easily go to Andersson, imo which means likely around $1mil. Bennett's one roster spot gets taken by ROR himself.

That should still allow us to fill a RW spot with what posters have been desiring - An Evander Kane type player in the $5.5-$7mil range

i think it really depends on the conversations they've had with Fox... kid has way too much potential to give up on... imo at least, unless he's made it clear that he will not sign with calgary.

Brodie and Bennett + a 3rd?

have to also account for ROR's cap hit which isn't insubstantial at 7.5 until 2023...

not sure how you would fit Kane and ROR in salary wise...

No he didn't. He signed there thinking it was a rebuilding club that was beginning to move up and become a playoff team. Now they're nowhere close and he's visibly and audibly letting it be known that he's struggling to even find passion for the game with how bad they are.

Do you mean Nolan Patrick, their second overall pick who also could have gone first overall??!! |

As noted above, $6.5m out, $8.5m in. Of course that changes once Andersson comes off ELC down the road so admittedly the cap structure could get screwy. But it shouldn't stop us from being able to do something with RW.

Out: Brodie $4.6, Bennett $1.9

In: ROR $7.5, replacing Brodie with Andersson $1mil (estimate)

They don't have any other Patrick's that I know of.
Let's not carried away with draft position. It's all relative. He's a good, young player, but he's not a Patrik Laine or Jack Eichel, and the other piece we get in that deal is going into the final year of his contract, where as the Flames would be dealing one of the top offensive right handed defensemen in the entire league who hasn't even seen his 25th birthday yet and is signed for multiple years for under $6 million.

I really appreciate your optimism RoofDaddy and love your proposals as you normally make realistic ones that are also fun to think about. I can't share in the reality of this one though.
Teams will always rightfully get carried away with draft position when they haven't even finished their first season after going top 2.

I suppose, but even with draft position I don't think it's that out to lunch.

Top young D get big returns. Seth Jones was less proven than Hamilton is now and when traded returned a young #1 center who had recently been drafted 4th overall.

Sergachev had 4 games in the NHL and returned a recent 3rd overall pick who was coming off a 50+ point NHL season in Drouin.

That's why I was emphasizing the first year in the league since being drafted aspect. Even if the value was fair you'd be hard pressed to find a GM with the balls to take a number 2 pick and trade him in the hopes that he doesn't turn into an absolute star.

Nolan Patrick is far and away the most valuable asset that trade. Flyers would be bonkers to do it
