Bennett is playing himself in to an energy player territory. He has no finish. I am not ready to give up on him, but #1 C is a pipe dream.

I think you must be undervaluing Fox, significantly. Moving Bennett is a mistake in the making, as I think the moment he gets away from Gully's lines he's going to start to contribute offensively in a meaningful way.
The team could try and take another shortcut by sending out young assets, I'd just caution them against it.
I view Fox as having more value than our 2019 1st, and would sooner move that pick than Fox.

There's no certainty Fox ever plays a game for Calgary. The thing I like most about our 2019 first is there isn't a good chance it leaves us for free agency.
And the chances of Bennett becoming a sixty point elite 2-way Centre like Ryan O'Reilly is now are very small.
If that offer was on the table (which it wouldn't be, because I think Buffalo would scoff at it), you take it every day and twice on Sunday.
O'Reilly would be exatly the kind of player we'd be looking to add. If we aren't willing to just over half the value it would take to land such a player, maybe we can send a fax out saying we're willing to move Brouwer and that we'll throw in Hanowski.

Then we don't do it. I'm saying as a Flames fan I wouldn't offer that, I'm not saying whether or not Buffalo would accept it.
Simply adding in RoR would do nothing to fix the culture issues that face this team - unless, in that proposed deal, you believe Fox and Bennett are the cancers eating away at this team's core. Adding players without addressing the problems that exist won't help this team take a step forward.

Couldn't disagree more with you on this.
Getting a top line NHL centre who's a heart and soul player for a prospect that may never play for us and a player who may never be more than a 3rd liner would be highway robbery.
2nd, you have no idea what the culture issues are and by all accounts RoR is a character player and leader. He's exactly the kind of player in terms of both skill and temperament we'd be looking for.

I understand why many posters are keen on moving out young assets like Bennett, Fox and Janko. We are building something special, and our window is now.
On the other hand, I think that if management is serious about a shakeup, we are going to see some vets on the way out. That group that sits in the 27 to 30 age bracket.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if one or two of Backlund, Frolik, Brodie, or Stone find themselves in different threads for next year. I'm thinking that it is likely that Tre holds onto anyone that has not yet reached their potential (whether they achieve that potential or not). That leaves the known commodities.
The one young guy I could see moving is Ferland. He had a dream scenario of playing on the first line for most of the year. His value will never be higher than right now.
I like the direction that posters have in targeting players like ROR. I just disagree with the type of player that we would see going back in such a trade.

Just out of curiosity, what is the kind of package you think it would take and that you'd be willing to put forth for a player like RoR?
I don't have a affinity for him in particular, but I do think he'd be a great fit.
The problem is, he's a fantastic player, and he would take a lot to land. As would any player of that ilk.
The difficulty with this thread in particular is the penchant for so many people to say "I'd love to land ______.... but only if we don't have to give up [anything of comparable value]". That's not limited to this forum or fanbase, but it's one of the most futile parts of discussing trades in general. No one wants to give up what it would likely take to get.
Just curious what you think would be a reasonable offer in this random proposal?

Any proposal for ROR, in my opinion, starts with the guy we would least like to give up. That's Backlund. ROR is a better player, and Buffalo knows that, but the drop off between the two is not that great.
I would then do what many fans would consider an overpay, and add Brodie. We can ask for a sweetener to balance the contracts, but Buffalo would still come away feeling good about the trade.
From a Calgary perspective, I would feel very comfortable going into next season with centre depth of :
ROR
Monahan
Jankowksi
Shore
with Bennett as an emergency stand in.
Spend the summer figuring out the 4th defenceman.
Edit : I would add, that I think that slotting Backlund is a bit of a problem for this team. He is cemented in the second line because of his overall ability, but to have a player like that you need a truly elite first line centre to make Backlund's defense really shine. With someone like Crosby, Tavares or .... Eichel ahead in the depth chart, Backlund is a potential shutdown monster. The way Calgary is built, they need more offense from the second line, and that won't happen with Backlund, and they are not going to start rebuilding around him, or have the opportunity at landing a top 5 centre in the league. He has more value to Buffalo than he does to Calgary, and ROR has more value to Calgary than to Buffalo, due to the makeup of their respective cores. It's a potentially good 'hockey trade'.

Dude, that monkey that's Sam is reaching for in your avatar is now King Kong. And he's not on Sam's back, he's standing in Sam's chest.
The fantasy that Sam Bennett is a coaching change away from 'breaking through' is about as thin of a hope as it gets. But then again, there's still hope for Yakupov, right?

If it were left up to voting by fans, not a single deal would ever be made in the NHL. That's how much fans overvalue their own players and prospects.

ROR's salary is going to be tough for Buffalo in a couple years. Reinhart looks to have rebounded some, and Mittlestadt looks like he will be good. So that, plus his comments, might make him tradeable. That's pretty much the trade I was thinking: Backlund/Brodie for ROR+. What the plus is makes the trade a win, loss or tie.

I think ROR is someone Brad should target HARD. He's a guy that is capable of being a number one centre which normally go for the moon. But has a lack of "shine" that makes every GM in the league jump in. He has a bit of a shady past in the NHL which lowers value (but doesn't mean much now, imo), he's played on a terribad team this season which lowers value, and the Sabres will likely have trouble with his salary, where as we could fit it in on the Flames.
I truly think if a good team gets ROR in a trade it'll take about a year for it to turn into one of those "I can't believe the (insert team) were able to get a top line centre for that package, unbelievable more GM's didn't go after him" trades.

I'd be wanting to keep Backlund as the 3C if we traded for ROR personally.
Monahan
O'Reilly
Backlund
That's a pretty solid group of top 3 centers for the next 5 seasons.

If I'm Brad I try to woo them with a great package out of the hop. I know most don't seem to think there's any reason to worry about Fox, I'm not of them, I think this was the year he'd either sign with us or he's going to finish Harvard and test FA.
Buffalo is in the east and Fox doesn't have the "he's definitely going 4 years" label in the media circles YET. I think you dangle him as part of a huge return trade before he most likely turns to literally nothing next April.
To Buffalo: Fox, Brodie, Bennett
To CGY: ROR

i like ROR, but that seems to be a bit of an over payment imo... 2 pieces out of those 3, plus a 3rd rounder maybe depending on the mix...
