If its not an issue why even mention it? I really didnt think I would need to include him in the problem vet category, nor Backlund or Frolik for that matter.

This is right in the Flames wheel house to be all over. I don't like our competitive chances if it's a big group of teams looking to court coaches over an extended spring/summer.

If Treliving passes on AV and we still have GG as our coach next season. Then bring me Tre's head.

I'm not going to get too excited. I don't believe Treliving has any prior experience working with AV and if anyone has been paying attention he's hired people that he's worked with before almost exclusively. I don't think that necessarily means he's absolutely going to hire a guy that he's worked with for this important hire but that he's not going to prioritize AV as he's probably going to want to interview a bunch of guys like last time and there's going to be a group of teams that roll out the red carpet for AV and offer him contracts right away. The fact that Treliving didn't even bother to pick up the phone to ask Boudreau for an interview was a bit of a red flag for me in regards to how Treliving sees the coaching position as I feel he prioritizes what's in his mind the best fit over just getting the best coach (based on record and NHL success). Maybe I'm wrong of course but that's my read on things.

where had he worked with GG previously? BT was with the Coyotes from 2003 to 2014; GG was with the Las Vegas Wranglers from 2003 to 2009, with the Stars organization from 2009 to 2013 and then in Vancouver. I don't think their paths crossed before BT hired him in Calgary.

maybe that's the problem with Treliving though. Just because he doesn't know the guy doesn't mean he can't meet him or that he isn't the best fit right now for the job.
Frankly the coaches that Treliving likely knows 'well' aren't that good or are Tippett which made a coup attempt in a previous life. Might do Treliving some good to look outside his traditional group of contacts...

BT better move quickly because I could see the Oilers canning McLennan to bring in AV. No doubt in my mind AV would choose the Oil over the Flames too, if both options were on the table.

I agree with him, I think the chance to work with Connor McDavid is awfully appealing to a lot of coaches, not to mention the fancy new building. I could see the appeal over Calgary personally as depressing as that is.
I also think it's bad news for us if Edmonton goes and hires this guy.

I think Treliving was Commissioner of the ECHL when GG was putting up good regular season records as a coach in that league (yet not winning a championship). I'm guessing Treliving was influenced by that.

Vigneault makes his teams and players better. In his early years in VAN he had average players and played a defensive style.
Once the personnel improved he changed the style as the team evolved.
-It wouldn't surprise me to hear Ken King tie in the team's ability to get elite coaches or FA to the arena issue.

Exactly what I was thinking, both reasons (mcdavid & new building).

Any coach going to Edmonton knows what he is getting in terms of 'support' and direction from upstairs. They might be intrigued with having McDavid but they don't give a rats ass about the arena.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Is it commonplace or even allowed to negotiate with a new coach prior to firing the current one?

Coaches spend hours and hours at the arena, they sometimes sleep there after morning skates before a game. Its home away from home, its foolish to think a state of the art venue doesn't factor into a decision when picking between 2 teams, especially when the other venue is the Dome. I'm not saying its the deciding factor but when you couple that with Mcdavid, Edmonton is more appealing.

It's the same 200x85. You completely miss the more important factor being the support and direction from upstairs. Edmonton is a 3 ring circus. Any coach can see that.

I don't think the management structure in Edmonton is all that appealing with all the ex-Oiler cooks in the kitchen. Doesn't strike me as the type of setup that would be appealing to veteran coaches.

I can buy people wanting to work with Connor McDavid. But does anyone really care about the building?
Does it matter for people in real life? Like do you care if your office is brand new or if your office is 20 years old? Does it matter that you work in one of the older skyscrapers in west downtown compared to the Bow building or Brookefield?
Have people made work decisions in their lives based purely on the age of the building?

Some lucky team will hire him, but it won’t be the Flames. I have a horrible feeling that GG will still be the Flames coach.
