It would be interesting how many extra hotel nights the Flames get compared to the Islanders (or all the teams in the North East) where there are 4-5 teams that you either take the team bus or catch a cab/limo to the away arena.
There has to be a 90 percent chance that he signs with a team that travels the same or less than the Islanders.
PS The Ducks and Kings and Vegas travel around 5,000 miles less less than the Flames because they all have 2 close away cities in their division.

I just have to make a point about this weird obsession you have with increased travel time.
48253 - 35092 = 13,161 miles over 3 years/3 = 4,387 miles/year
The average airspeed of a jet is 400-500 miles/hour depending on jetstream and other environmental factors, so let's split the difference at 450 mph.
4,387 miles/year / 450 mph = an additional 9.75 hours of air travel per year. Spread that over 6.5 months and you're looking at 1.5 hours per month of extra air time. That's one extra bad movie a month to watch.
Is this really the deciding factor when we're talking about a potential $70-90 million contract? The answer is no.

6 m each for Marner and Nylander and 10M for Matthews uses up 22 M and leaves 8 M for Tavares. Marleau is getting 6.2 for the next 2 years so hey actually have 14 for Tavares.
A bridge deal of 3M x2 for either Marner or Nylander moves the cap crunch down the road
Babcock as coach, Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Morgan Rielly, Zaitzev and Freddie Anderssen as the rest of core..... if the money is even close seem like a nice place to play hockey.

The Leafs don't need any more offense, they need defense. I don't see why they would even go after Tavares since they have their own franchise center under control for far longer and far cheaper than JT.
Just because it's possible doesn't make it likely.

Average means 48,000 each every year. the average for the last 10 years for the flames would be close to 48,000 You would divide that by 10 and then the difference would even be smaller.
Ovechkin averages 46 goals for the last 13 years Stajan averaged 11
I would say that Oveckin averages 35 more goals/year than Stajan.
You would jump in an say that was over 13 years so it really is only 2 goals a year.
Stajan, with his close comparison to Ovechkin using your "style" maths should be in the HHOF this time next year.
Hope he goes in as a Flame rather than a Leaf.

Sorry, I missed that one part, but my point still stands for the most part. 4.5 hours of air travel over a month isn't going to make or break a deal of that magnitude. I honestly don't see a whole lot of teams in the East with either the cap space or team structure to sign Tavares long term.
Montreal, Carolina, Detroit maybe Columbus, and the Rangers if he's ok with a rebuild (he won't be) are likely destinations in the East outside of NYI. Flames have a better upside than all of those teams not named Columbus. Outside of that, he will likely come out west.

Yep because having a Crosby AND a Malkin was a waste of a franchise centre.
Grtezky/Messier was just overkill.
Why would teh Flames even be interested as they already have Monahan
And the cheaper part??? What will Matthews sign for?

As an RFA? Much less than Tavares will command as a UFA. Over the next 7 years I can guarantee that Matthews will make less than Tavares.

If Toronto ends up signing him, that's potentially $21 to $24 million locked up in two players once they ink Matthews out of his entry level contract. That's nuts. But a 1-2 punch of Matthews and Tavares would be pretty deadly.

Have you ever flown east to work? Have a 8 am meeting that is really 6am in Calgary. The Flames have only 3 teams in the same time. In the east you are playing a majority of your road games in the same time zone.
Also interesting why you are so strong on Tavares not wanting to play in his home town. Where he grew up and played his 5 years of junior hockey.
Toronto is not a rebuilding team.

Pittsburgh did a similar thing with Crosby and Malkin.
Say you get Tavares and Matthews for 22M total. That's 27.5% of an 80M cap.
25.5% of the cap went to Malkin and Crosby in '15/'16 when they won the Cup.

so Matthews signs for much less than McDavid? Closer to Draisatl? Getting pretty close to saying that the Flames are overpaying their 3 RFA long term signings.

To be honest, I can't see Matthews making less than $10M a year. He will sign for between Eichel and McDavid numbers IMO.

I still think Tavares stays on the Island. If he doesn't however I think he signs a 7 year 84M deal with the Habs. I am still 100% confident he is not coming to Calgary.

What makes you think he would sign with the Habs? They were honestly not even in my top 5 teams of potentials.

What you are describing is the exact opposite of how the Pens have won the last 2 cups.

They drafted both of their franchise centers. A bit of a difference to signing another one as a UFA, and they had to scrimp and save like hell on the wings (Kessel notwithstanding) at times to fit both of those players on the same team.

If he wanted to play for a ####ty team he'd just stay with the Islanders.
