Because the Flames have a better record without Tavares than NYI has with him?

Probably wants to know who the coach will be before signing somewhere.

Chances are probably 5% or lower, but who knows. Don’t know how promising the Flames seem to him after this season. Will be interesting to see how it plays out

Get Darryl in here before FA, then it will probably increase the appeal and outlook of the team IMO.

I just don't see Tavares wanting to sign in a small Canadian city. Guy grew up in Toronto, and spent all his professional career in New York. Unless the guy somehow craves small town, prairie living, I just can't see him having any interest in moving to Calgary.

This ain't the 80's anymore. Calgary is known as a thriving city now. Supposedly even more so that we are (apparently) out of the recession now.

The Leafs will be using that cap space on Nylander, Matthews, and Marner.

It would be interesting how many extra hotel nights the Flames get compared to the Islanders (or all the teams in the North East) where there are 4-5 teams that you either take the team bus or catch a cab/limo to the away arena.
There has to be a 90 percent chance that he signs with a team that travels the same or less than the Islanders.
PS The Ducks and Kings and Vegas travel around 5,000 miles less less than the Flames because they all have 2 close away cities in their division.
|
If Tavares or any player his age factors in travel miles and nights when making a decision another important factor would be altitude in Calgary. It would be a considerable change and adjustment on his body and training to go from sea level to thin air. It would take him some time to adjust but in the long run it could improve his conditioning.

Because the team terribly underachieved under an assistant coach at best leading the way doesn't take away from the potential adding a piece like Tavares could bring over the coming years and that won't be lost on him if the money and term offered is competitive. You really can't know for sure so saying yes or no definitively is just silly to do. Neither you nor I know what his camp is looking at outside of the contract. One player can see a lot of potential in this group while another may think were a middle of the road team with little appeal. Who knows...just let it play out and see.
There's nothing wrong with entertaining the idea as a fan. Wet blankets that have soured on the team and assume to know what a FA is thinking should just be ignored.
|
Players care about the arena situation because it could mean relocating. IF someone like Tavares actually considered Calgary, and was starting or had or was considering starting a family, pretty sure youdont want to “settle” ina place that may be moving somewhere in the timeframe of your contract.
I’ll agree it’s not the biggest thing on he list but it is a consideration.
As for ownership, you’d be a fool to think hat Ottawa hasn’t down serious damage to their ability to attract top FAs with the way Karlsson situation has played out this year

I would love if he signed with the Flames. I can see his agent using the Flames as leverage against another team and the Flames being "in it" only to drive up the value of the contract

After Texas and Nevada, Calgary has one of the lowest tax regimes, no? So money is almost in our favour, everything else being equal.
We lose on likelihood of winning now.
We lose on municipal coolness.
If we could get him, you gladly move Backlund to make cap room if that's what you have to do. But I don't think you have to.
If we drive up the price, maybe we can get in on a cap move deal (i.e. someone on a roster has to go to make room for Tavares, maybe we can get that guy).

There is a better chance that flames ownership goes back to the table for arena this summer than Tavares signing with the flames. Actually to be fair they would have the same odds .... o%

IMO Vancouver is the only Canadian team that has a chance of landing him and that's because they basically can offer him McDavid money without breaking a sweat. That said I fully expect him to sign with the Rangers as it's kind of a no-brainer as he's already in NY and it's the preferred destination for most players when they hit free agency.

Ive heard a few people say that pretty much the only place he has a 0% chance of signing is the rangers. They claim he is too nice of a guy and too loyal to islanders fans for that. By a few people I mean on various radio shows and such.
