not sure if that was a loophole that has been closed, but its a nice bonus right off the bat that helps mitigate the ELC to some degree.

That isnt what they gave Gaudreau. By signing and playing a game he burnt one year of his elc. As far as money he got a game check and his signing bonus. A few months later his elc bonus for the next season kicked in. Fox will get the same thing if he comes out.

Nope. Only former first round picks that do not sign an entry level contract allow for the 2nd rd compensation

Ya wouldn't that be nice if a 3rd round pick didn't sign and you got bumped up to a 2nd.

The Shannon interview was really telling IMO. Look at where the Flames ranked in offence from the D. IIRC, 14th..19th... somewhere in the teens.
Now take a look at the ranking of goals against, and you will see this is not a hugely stingy team, especially considering the goaltending that this team has received.
I wouldn't trade Brodie (who has been looking really good lately too) for offensive help. What I would do is get this Flames team to actually use their defencemen. There is absolutely no excuse for this team to be so low in the rankings when you are looking at the personnel. It doesn't look like they have been playing it safe either and being overly-safe defensively to make up for the lack of offence.
Lately, the defence seem much more active offensively than for the majority of the season, and I hope that it is an adjustment that Gulutzan (finally) made, and not just guys deviating too much. Really hoping this is a permanent adjustment.
The Flames will be able to generate a lot more offence if they use their defence more, and it wouldn't be so blatantly obvious that this team 'needs offensive help'.
Add a goal-scoring top 6 winger and get the defencemen more engaged in the offensive zone, and this team would be very difficult to contain. The forwards would get more points as well. Just look at some of the players that Hartley had to choose from, and I will show you players that leached off really nicely from the D (and some of the other existing forwards on the team). I think the Flames would be 'fine' offensively if they just utilized the defence more, but both would be awesome.

Totally agree. The Flames' strength is their mobile defencemen. They should use that more effectively. Seems like they have recently.
As for Fox, based on that game, doesn't look much like he wants to end his college career just yet!

Remember that he's only at the end of his second college season. Even if he doesn't sign this year, the Flames still control his rights until August 2020.
Also, since he's going to Harvard, he might choose to finish the academic year (Finals are in early May) and sign during the summer.

Adam Fox is too good to stay 4 years in college, stagnate as a player and piss a year or two of NHL earnings down the toilet. The Flames hold the cards in this situation. He will probably sign when this season's over.

What was the highest profile drafted player to ever hold and go to UFA after college?

I'd say Blake Wheeler. #5 overall pick wanted nothing to do with playing in Arizona. Signed with Boston who traded him to Atlanta.

Another solid Chiarelli trade, grabbed Rich Peverley for Wheeler.

No. I want them to trade two of the NHL D for forward help and let these defenders play in the NHL.

Been saying this all year.
The lack of offense this year is primarily due to two things:
1) the lack of production from the D. Points from the D, last 3 years:
15/16: 203
16/17: 176
17/18: 131 (on pace for 155)
despite the fact that the personnel has been improved annually.
2) the lack of production from Versteeg, Jagr and to lesser extent, Bennett.
Versteeg and Jagr were probably penciled in for 30 points each. They have 8 and 7.
Get the D properly engaged in the offense.
Assume Bennett and Jankowski are a little better next year as they mature.
Add a decent scoring winger.
Top tier team.

Yes Brodie gets 40 points a year but he is a minus double digit numbers and has too many game costing gaffs. Probably the most frustrating player on the Flames because he will give you a small stretch of games where he looks great but then he will go on a long stretch of terrible play in his own end.

If the Flames move Brodie for a winger, they can bring g up a good defensive prospect (like Fox) who has a good shot at being a legit NHL player. What they can't do is promote a winger who has a good shot at being a legit NHL player because that's what they lack in their system. If Fox can even turn out like Shultz you have to make room for him and improve your forward scoring.
I think Fox signs soon, plays for the Heat in the playoffs and next year pushes for a spot and forces the team's hand to make a move if they haven't by then.

There is an avalaible top 4 D available in UFA that could potentially replace Brodie. Calvin de Haan. He has played well with Hamonic before. Biggest concern with him is recurring shoulder issues.
Banking on one of our prospects to backfill Brodie’s role (it’s a huge role regardless of what you think of Brodie), is insanely risky.

Keep Brodie and tell GG to let him roam free. He's one of the best rover d-men in the league but GG forbids him from skating or going deep into the o-zone. Hamonic is defensively responsible enough to make up for him.
Spend some cap space on a Neal/Perron/Nash type this summer, don't gut the defense core because the coach can't use a guy properly.

Harvard has a 3-1 lead in the 3rd period and Fox has a goal and an assist.
