Well it does accelerate particles of liquid... at non-relativistic speeds though.

As for the installation, putting two per bank and going for dual-channel mode would definitely work. But I believe that the memory controller also supports a "Flex Mode" where you fill one bank with two sticks, and the other banks with one stick. This should give you tri-channel for 12 GB and single channel for 4 GB, which depending on your usage may be faster.

Crucial blocked my transaction, something wierd about paying with a Canadian address and shipping to my PO box in Montana.
I've never heard of this in the 4 years I've had the box. Amazon certainly doesn't mind taking my money. So I'm back to square zero with this upgrade.
Does anyone have any old RAM laying around I could test?
I've done a bit more reading on the web and chatting with my guildies and now I believe that an SSD would result in better performance for WOW? Thoughts on that?

SSD's are an all around universal upgrade to a system, really cuts down on loading issues. Then moving from SSD to M.2 pushes it a bit more. Regardless it's a cheap and worthwhile switch.

That's weird. Amazon Canada does have a good deal on a 4GB X 3 DIMM kit that should work well with your tri-channel system:

Yeah, a SSD provides an extremely noticeable improvement but you'll see a bit less because the XPS only supports up to SATA 2. ~250 GB drives are pretty cheap and is plenty of space to store the OS, a fair amount of apps and some games while your old HD can store the less speed sensitive stuff like media files.
Some good priced drives:

Quick question: what would be the cost to build a decent (and affordable) gaming PC? I'm looking to replace my 8 year PC and I've been looking at some models:

I would like to play doom, but for the most part it will be retro games.

Yeah a "gaming PC" is only limited by how much you want to spend.
Assume on average you will spend around $1000-1200 on the tower, and then extra on whatever peripherals/monitor(s) you want. Sub-$1000 is easily achievable but will often be below mediocre and you'll end up making sacrifices on drive space, RAM, SSDs, etc. and buy cheaper parts (like substandard PSUs) which may fail earlier.

I just saw the posting and it is a nice PC! I'm hoping to have the money to buy one at the end of April.
If you still have the PC by then, I'll talk to you!

Does anybody have any experience with or have any opinions on Thunderbolt 3 external GPUs? It's doubtful I will ever build a new rig again as I've transitioned to powerful ultrabooks for the work that I do. It seems a great way to leverage the performance of an 8th-gen i7 ultrabook with 16GB of memory if I can pair it with an external GPU at home.

I just know that external GPUs are maybe the only way to manage to buy a high end GPU right now lol.

Windows 10 at 64-bit is about 30 gb after it's updated I believe, and it's been a long time since I've played warcraft but rough guess of 35 to 45 gb of space.
It's not like most modern mmos which have massive texture and audio files so I don't see 250gb as unreasonable.
Memory express often had 500gb Samsung ssd on for fairly cheap as well.

My WOW folder is 50GB right now. I'll be doing a fresh install, I'd expect that to be a lot smaller when I'm done the upgrade.
Do I need a bracket or a cable? Can I get that stuff from MemEx?

Yeah 40GB seems to be what most people report for WoW
A 500GB one is often a lot less than double a 250GB one, MemEx has the WD Blue 3D ones for $100 for 250GB, $180 for 500GB. The Samsungs are $25 more for each, though you get a couple of more years of warranty with the Samsungs (and I like them a lot).

I went with the Crucial one linked above. I really only need room for WOW + Win10.
Should be here on Thursday. Will pop by MemEx on Monday to get brackets and cables.
I think I can figure out how to clone my HDD from YouTube.
