Yeah. Burke has had a good run based on Edmonton needing to ditch Pronger, and Scott Niedermayer wanting to play with Rob.
I mean, really? What other GM has had two softballs like this with the arguably top 2 D at the time falling in his lap?
He parlayed it in to a career defining cup win then sewered the leafs and has done pretty much nothing here in a leadership role.
Dumb luck, good run, off you go

^^ GF took me to the Habs game just before Christmas. She pulled a bag of mushrooms out of her purse in the second period and we each did a gram. That made things much more interesting.

This is bad, boring, and infuriating hockey. And yet, all this pain for not a single draft pick in the first three rounds.

Don’t be so negative. Think how much earlier we’ll pick in round 4.

Should have traded Sam when he was still a question mark. His value must have bottomed out by now, kid can't even put up points with Gaudreau lugging him around

he's a 21-year kid, who they probably rushed. Not everyone develops at the same pace. If it were up to you Backlund would have been long gone too.

Haha quite the contrary, even when not putting up points Backlund was improving very noticeably in other areas of his game. Bennett on the other hand is regressing.

At this point I don't think anyone has done a great job and wouldn't be surprised if they cleaned house and started over with everyone. Treliving has made mistakes but he's owned up to it. He even exposed Brouwer in the expansion draft. GG is just bad though, Tre isn't forcing him to play Brouwer on the PP or to put glass out there when the team has to catch up.
They're all doing a piss poor job but GG is just a terribad coach and 100% has to go. There are a few good options available so now is the time. If a better gm becomes available the team should move on too.
I think Burke has to go too IMO

When Backlund was 21 he had played a grand total of 24 NHL games, but don't let a good anecdote get in the way of an emotional opinion.

Do you really want a guy who was taken to the cleaners by Pierre Dorion to be making any trades for your team?
I remember when Flames fans laughed at Don Sweeney, what a moron he was, what a bad GM. Don Sweeney is an infinitely better GM than Treliving. What a powerhouse they have built in Boston, so much great young talent. So nice to see a team build through the draft, the only way to build a sustainable team.

This should be a full thread. Did we have expectations. Is it just a dull team. Why do I not enjoy the flames anymore? I've asked myself all year. Is it the nhl that isn't exciting? I thought it was just me and maybe growing out of it. It's nice to see that it just isn't me.
I would watch every game always. No matter what. Our team combined with how negative our game threads are is depressing.
To sum it up, this year absolutely sucks.

Tkachuk, Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett (yes we know he hasn’t fully panned out (yet maybe?)), Jankowski, Brodie, Kulak. I see a lot of great young talent on that list as well or did I miss something?
Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington, Fox in the pipelines? I don’t think our top forward prospects are going to amount to much myself but regardless to act like this team isn’t building through the draft as well is completely off base.
Yes, Treliving made a calculated risk and traded away a number of picks in the upcoming draft to acquire good and fairly young talent on good contracts but let’s be honest, the Flames on paper should be competing for a top three divisional position in my opinion and it’s not even close.
Unfortunately they have fallen flat on their faces at multiple organizational levels. Biggest reasons in my opinion are the inability to acquire a scoring winger and complete failure to address the putrid play of our bottom two lines.
It’s just my two cents and honestly, I would listen to trade offers for anybody not named Tkachuk at this point. I think there needs to be a major shakeup from the top down.

Draft picks are crap shoots. But no team gets anywhere without hitting the jackpot with some of those picks. A franchise that traded away all of its late 1st, 2nd round, and 3rd round picks for depth NHLers would eventually wind up the worst team in the league.
Lazar is a good example of why it's folly. There's a good chance that 2nd round pick will be a bust. However, there's maybe a 25 per cent change it turns into a good NHLer player (better than Lazar), and a 10 per cent chance it becomes a front-line difference-maker. And you can pick up fringe NHLers for almost nothing (Shore cost a 7th).
Good NHL franchises hoard picks and use them to draft and develop players with a high ceiling. Bad ones use those picks to patch holes that their drafting and development have failed to address, and those patches almost always have low ceilings. It's a recipe for mediocrity.

Actually, Flames loaded up on draft picks over the past few years. With that in mind, I think it was a calculated risk by Treliving to pay that much for Hamonic because he believed the Flames stocked up in the previous years, they could afford it.
Treliving's biggest failure is Gulutzan. The guy should have been fired before Christmas. I've been preaching that all year and it looks like I was right. If GG survives the summer, Treliving's is on the hot seat.
I would also add, we're a bit unlucky in the sense that Bennett has been a bust so far. If he had become at least a 50pt centre, the scoring problems would not be such a problem for this team. As it is...

Bennett is not a bust. How can he get 50 points when he's gets less minutes then Brouwer? He's so misused.
PP from the start of the year should have been Brodie, Verteeg, Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett

Maybe I am missing something, but each team is given 7 picks in each draft. So over the 4 years Treliving has been here we should have had 28 picks. In those years Treliving has made 25 picks. When I think loaded up on picks, I think what the Rangers did this year. I think of a franchise that has picked 40 times over 4 years, not one that has picked less than the league gives them the ability to pick with each year and a team that is set to have 16 picks instead of 21 over the next 3 drafts.
Treliving is a bad NHL17 GM who trades all his picks for players.

I think we've seen enough over the years to say that Sean and Johnny while elite offensive players are not leaders. Hopefully Tkatchuk keeps progressing and becomes the leader of the pack.
Bennett not panning out in any way so far is a major blow for the organization (and my spirit ...). You can see how tremendously skilled he is, hopefully he can still put it together and fix the depth issues up front.
The decline of TJ Brodie is amazing.

You can say Bennett is misused all you want. Fact is, when he's on the ice, he shows absolutely no flashes of anything.
Stupid junior toe drag plays, penalties in the offensive zone, shoot first mentality and just general bone-head hockey. Comparing him and Backlund is apples and oranges.

Bennett is a grittier, less offensively talented version of Sam Gagner.
